To answer Jay, yes you can chain Dark Bead.
DB -> fast R1 (kat, spear, piercing sword etc)
DB -> BF/GC (45 Dex) -> fast R1
DB -> BF/GC <-> WoG -> fast R1

As long as you have 45 Dex and you're fast enough, you should be able to chain these three spells into each other. However, DB must come first as it's too slow to be a part of the chain, but serves well as it's starter. Of course the usual stagger -> bs also applies here and in case of DB this usually means death for anyone on the receiving end, unless something reduces damage of DB.

Believe it, or not but Dex does affect DB casting speed. It's very tiny, perhaps only a few frames (24 iirc), but the difference is there.

Dark Bead works wonderfully at the start because it demolishes shields, and provides the opening whatever else if they happen to even survive.

You were doing this by wielding a Catalyst in one hand and whatever else in the other hand right?

Yes, there's usually not enough time to swap to something else, but DA WoG, which pulls the opponent towards you has slightly longer stagger animation it seems as it allows for further chaining. On the other hand, my opponents simply failed to evade. I didn't do any elaborate tests, just tried it a few times in random PvP.

Oh ok. At least it shows that there are some possibilities to use it in some kinda of combo though.
