Personally, I think the Stray Demon and Asylum Demon were once slim, and could fly. They settled at the Asylum, ate a ton of undead a day, and got big. And that's why Firesage is huge, he eats Demons.

I can't remember where but there's a thread in dark souls section that discusses the same thing. Do a search for stray demon and you may find it.

I think you might be thinking of this thread.
There was also a thread talking about how the taurus and capra demon were able to get to their boss areas too. I don't know if the discussion of how the stray and asylum demon ever popped up, but you can check it here just in case.
Also, I'd like to give an idea out about the stray demon. When we are able to actually fight this boss we have to go through a broken roof/floor in order to get to it. Before we encountered this thing it was locked up, just like we were.
The undead asylum is used for the purpose or containing undead, who haven't even hollowed yet mind you. The idea behind that place is to make sure the rejected have a place to be cut off from the rest of the world. In a way it's a lot like the Painted World, except not containing some of the most threatening things to the gods with the exception of ourselves.
With that being said the stray demon seems to be a prisoner just like us. It doesn't have a way to get out either. Every time we see this thing it's just wandering around in it's cell that it was put in.
As to how it got there? I believe the Way of White has a lot to do with the Undead Asylum and bringing the undead up there. Chances are that since the demon we encounter is a 'Stray' the Way of White was able to somehow capture the beast while it was roaming and send it to the asylum.
Which leads to my last idea for this. We only see one other demon use the same type of magic as the Stray demon and that would be from the Demon Firesage. Now this magic isn't pyromancy as indicated by the Demon's Catalyst that says that the Firesage was one of the last to master the original art of fire. My thoughts with this is that the Stray Demon was one of the other masters of the art of fire before the demon transformation outbreak. If this is the case of course, the reason for him being locked up might really be because the Way of White is trying to figure out a way to preserve the original art of fire, may be trying to develop a miracle to help those turned to demons, or they kept it there for other reasons.

This is the tale of the three demon brothers...
The Eldest, the Firesage Demon, Her name was El Taco.
The Middle Child, The Stray Demon, his name was Dr. Slab.
the Youngest, the Asylum Demon, his name was Asylum Demon.
They lived in the Demon ruins together for some time, but the two younger boys wanted to leave, the ruins were depressing, they wanted to go somewhere where they could feast on bodies of all sorts.
The Oldest was trapped behind a fog door, so she didn't really care.
They set out on a mission to reach the Undead Asylum!
When they reached blight town, Dr. Slab farted a most poisonous fart, this was studied by some local scientists for a while.
They reached firelink, and it took 20 crows each to carry them to the asylum. When they were flying over the asylum they were nearly about to land, until they farted again and killed every crow.
Asylum Demon was trapped on the roof, only an undead could motivate him to come down. Then he would eat them.
Dr. Slab was trapped in the basement, as he fell down through the roof, but became transparent and flew through the floor and started to starve. He resorted to eating giant slabs of metal.
A family split.... Would they ever reunite?
lol no you killed them

"Demon catalyst formed from Izalith molten rock. Can be used as fire weapon. The Demon Firesage was the first demon, and the last master of the original fire arts, before the Witch of Izalith was engulfed by Chaos, creating pyromancy."
The stray demon has a catalyst, he also knows the spells, he was likely a normal sized fire magician, who turned into a demon when the witch of izalith failed.
"Pyromancy flame drawing upon the latent power
of Quelana of Izalith, mother of pyromancy.
For the pyromancer, a flame is a precious
thing indeed, to be nurtured, often for an
entire lifetime. When the flame is shared, it
creates an eternal bond between the parties."
Maybe fire magic is pyromancy shared by the Witch, and cast through catalysts, the pupils included stray demon and demon firesage; when she tried to replicate the flame, they turned into demons, even though one of them was nowhere near Izalith.
Now what this doesn't explain is how the asylum demon got up there too, but you find him in the open, making it possible that he just flew his way up, or climbed, or both.
Maybe he was searching for the stray demon?

I just think that stray demon and asylum demon got to the surface like capra or taurus and went to undead asylum just because there are tons of undead that try to leave undead asylum to become the one from the profecie and when they try to leave, they eat them.
now why is the stray demon under the floor i dont now, but its like when you figth the asylum demon you cant ear the stray demon rigth under the floor

Actually you can see the Stray Demon roaming in his cell at the very beginning of the game while you are walking down the hall to the ladder. You can see him through the bars to the right as soon as you leave your cell.

It's possibly because of the fact that the area where the floor breaks is the same area that the asylum demon jumped down on. That probably had a large effect on weakening the floor, adding a little more weight to floor afterwards just about did it for the floor.
It's not all that surprising to me personally, the Asylum Demon is an easy boss but it still was huge in size.

I can't tell on my tv, but does stray have wings? Don't remember if it butt slams or just WoG's you. With no wings, it's too heavy to pull itself out. And, I think the floor above is too high for him to jump

I say the Asylum demon and the Stray demon are the children of the Demon Firesage. How they got there? I don't know.

If we continue on from the comment about the Firesage once being a Fire Sorcerer (sorry can't remember who posted that, credit to thee but I'm far too lazy to go back a page and check EDIT: Hue), who was corrupted when the Witch of Izalith failed, then its fair IMO to give similar origins to the other two clone-bosses.
As the Asylum Demon drops the key to the only known door out of the asylum, I think he was originally a warden or some such in the asylum. You've got to think that if the gods are so hoighty toighty about the undead running around unchecked, they'd have more than a few layers of security to their prison right?
I would suggest a similar role for the Stray Demon, although I can't think of any logical role he could play in the asylum. Perhaps a smith as he drops a titanite slab upon death.
The reason they remain where they are is that they got there while human-sized. When they were corrupted by the influence of the Flame of Chaos the grew to what they are now and became trapped.

its a good idea thinking in stray demon as a smith, never thougth abouts that option but i dont think the influence of the bed of caos could reach the human in undead asylum

That why i said there might be a connection between the stray demon and the witch of izalith because he uses fire spells and might be one of those users of the fire artsIshiotzin wrote:its a good idea thinking in stray demon as a smith, never thougth abouts that option but i dont think the influence of the bed of caos could reach the human in undead asylum

the witch of izalith is the bed of chaos so i think that some demons are born with some "fire powers" or even "chaos powers"
it migth not be a fire magician but a chaos magician

The magic the firesage uses is the original magic of the flame that the sisters of chaos used when fighting against the demons.
"Demon catalyst formed from Izalith molten rock. Can be used as fire weapon. The Demon Firesage was the first demon, and the last master of the original fire arts, before the Witch of Izalith was engulfed by Chaos, creating pyromancy." ~Demon's Catalyst description
Chances are that the Stray Demon was another master of the original fire arts that learned it before the Firesage demon.

Speculation (Meaning I un-include the words "I think" alot.)
Demons were once men, that is why chaos is connected by humanity, when the lord soul of Life was corrupted, so were many humans, and they were turned to demons, Which explains why some are where they are.
When the Soul of Death (Nito's soul) Was stolen by Pinwheel, It may have contributed to a quicker spread of undead.
Humans are basically getting the worst out of everything.

Oh god; so many new kids that don't do their research.
Izalithians are not humans. They are a race of their own; even before the creation of the Flame of Chaos. This is canon.
Now back on the Fire Sorcery topic. Firesage was the last MASTER of fire sorcery. Stray was probably just a regular fire sorc; not a big deal of a chap.
Now back on the Main Topic:
Stray Demon was the first demon Gwyn's troops met. Back then; they had no idea what to do with demons; since they were a new thing.
They captured it and sent to the Asylum to study it and find a way of killing demons. They probably tested everything on it until finding a way of killing the beasts.
He was later used as a trash can for all the hollowed undead. They had to clear the cells every once in a while right.
This lead us to another question: So why there are so many Hollows in their cells? Simple; the wardens had to leave in a rush. One of the most wanted criminals was nearby, so they rushed to capture him. (Who? I'll explain later).
Before leaving, the wardens had recently captured you and Oscar (the fact you two are not hollows is proof the wardens being around "recently"). The wardens left the Asylum on its own for a while because nothing bad could happen, right? No.
Enter Asylum Demon. He finds the Asylum with nobody guarding it, full of delicious humans. He attacks the Asylum, and while he was breaking a few cells, Oscar escapes. He immediately set out to free all the other Undead. Some are sane, some aren't. After the riot (Hollows x Sane Undead x Asylum Demon) ends; Oscar sets out to help one last cell, with an Undead that seems ok (you).
The Asylum Demon finds him however and smash him down from the roof into that iron ball room. Oscar is no more. You go and kill the Asylum Demon that has eaten one of the Main Keys (like Gaping Dragon ate a key too), and by luck finds a giant crow; that was there to save a very important friend.
Short after the wardens come back; Two Black Knights. They were the wardens, the reason of such selection was that they were masters at killing demons, if it was necessary to execute Stray.
With them, they bring the most wanted criminal and the actual friend of the crow. This criminal holds the Peculiar Doll in his hands. The Giant Crow was there to rescue him; not you. Sadly the criminal is no Undead, and rots after a while.
