Some may say just roll bs but I'm not exactly proficient at roll bsing. Are there any other ways.

Roll bs'ing is the best way to counter since its the easiest with a little practice, just practice as little with a friend or just random people, losing a couple of matches due to practicing is nothing.

Well you can kick them right before the attack? But sometimes you still get a phantom hit on yourself

Another vote goes to roll BS. But, don't spam it. Randomly roll to one side or another and occasionally try to BS. This is because the good players will unlock and manually aim the ground pound. So, they can punish you for trying to roll BS.
