Story, Combat, Armor Design, Level Design, Character Design.
Now I just need a sci-fi version and I'm set for life.

You should edit out story and character design. I thought those were the two most awful aspects of Dark Souls. The story is pretty much nonexistent and the character creation is pretty awful. Unless you meant character design as in the actual characters like Iron Tarkus or Solaire but even those were lacking to me.

Re: dark souls does
Character design in regards to the NPC's, I will admit the character creation is not that great in my opinion. Although making fat blue people is hilarious.
Dark Souls probably has my favourite story in a game to date, I love how it is told and the fact that unless you look for it there isn't much of one. Even the ending I love.

I hated the Gwyn fight, no cutscene for the final boss? Seriously?

Re: dark souls does
I actually think less is more in regards to cut scenes. I love MGS, but just getting into it with Gwyn was something I loved. The fact that Gwyn doesn't sit there and examine you for a minute, or for some reason make some sort of big entrance for you. He is a hollowed great lord that exists just for this flame, exists to keep others out at this point. There is nothing left of the man he once was, he is a mindless monster that is going to destroy you. And you have to put him out of his misery. The music, the fight, in fact in some ways I like the ease of Gwyn's fight. It shows just how far he's fallen, how much he's lost in his search for order. It just carries so much power, much more power and weight than anything could convey with a three minute cut scene.

Re: dark souls does
Combat pure and simple. Skyrim is too simplistic, most other RPGs have crappy combo attacks and, the fact that in other games I can take unrealistic amounts of damage. But, in dark souls getting stabbed in the back will kill me. In other games I can take on 10+ enemies and I don't have to worry about dying. In darksouls I have to lure them out one by one.

Re: dark souls does
i'm with you Tolvo. The story is very well done just in a completely different way to most other games so many people overlook it. I just finished Uncharted 3 and enjoyed the story, but it was a completely passive experience and is almost very far removed from the actually gameplay. It has the problem of trying to mesh a movie and a game together when they are very different mediums.
In contrast, the story of Dark Souls fits the game mechanics very well. Everything in Dark Souls is a mystery that needs effort to understand and even then you still need to use your own discretion/thoughts to decide the meaning of a lot of the events and NPCs. I love the combat and story as well as the character progression (Soul Level System).
Even though I understand the developers reasoning for the online mechanics, I think it is the only thing Dark Souls doesn't do very well. Imagine how much more fun Fight Club would be if it was a hell of a lot easier to actually choose their world to join and PvP.

Re: dark souls does
For me it's the online system. It's unlike any other online play and I actually like that you have to 'work' to get any kind of organization. The invasion system is just 'fresh' compared to any other MP game and the random co-op is great. It adds to the sense of loneliness and the tradeoffs of human vs hollow. It's what keeps me coming back for more even after getting the platinum trophy.

I have to agree hardcore on the water, I almost died to the hydra on my first playthrough because I was just constantly staring at the sweet *** water effect.

Re: dark souls does
I don't know if anything will ever be able to compare to the lore/story of DkS. It's so rare that anyone would create such a detailed universe and decide to hold most of it back for the player to discover (or imagine).
Also, weapons and combat. The 100th playthrough is almost as fresh as it was in the beginning just by deciding to focus on a different weapon or build.

Re: dark souls does
Taken from the TV Tropes page, the quote was so beautiful I can't not share it:
"I remember the first time I died. Facing down my foe was to be expected. Even inevitable. Resurrected, my soul awoke and my battles were fought harder. Death became my friend. I remember the first time I died. But dying gets easier; it's how you die that leaves your mark. Prepare to die..."

Because it's so unique in it's outlook for any game I've ever played.
It doesn't care if you hate it, get frustrated or refuse to play it. It just sticks to what it is and makes no apologies for it.
