Companies have been putting more and more bulls***t restrictions on technology in fear of piracy, often only worsening the problem.
A friend of mine had a television, from around 2006 I think...it was a 50" DLP flatscreen. A year or two ago, it just stopped working with his Playstation, his Apple TV, pretty much everything that transmitted an HDMI signal into his TV.
We're pretty sure it's because of an HDCP update all these companies implemented...stands for High Definition Copyright Protection...but just seems like a ******** excuse to make old technology obsolete to me. Pretty much everything HD except hooking up a computer just stopped working.
He just started downloading stuff when we wanted to watch it. The ironic thing was that, before this, he was so anti-piracy...people to this day make fun of him for buying CD's.
He has since landed a job, gotten a new TV, and pays for s**t again...but the main point he made during that time was that companies are doing so much to prevent piracy that they end up f***ing over the consumer, when the consumer is really the person they should be appealing to and giving the absolute best experience possible.
Until they find a way to do that, piracy will be a process of escalation.
