Great Hollow lizards, titanite slabs

I missed this zone on my first playthrough but found it on NG+. I've killed four lizards so far and gotten one titanite slab, plus several other titanite chunks and twinkling titanite.

The behavior of the zone is strange though and I'm having a hard time figuring out what is happening. Based off advice from http://darksouls.wikidot.com/crystal-lizard I dropped to the right from the bonfire, went to the top of that branch and dropped off to find the first two lizards. My method to kill them was just to equip weapon of choice (catalyst in this case), log out, then log back in and attack before they can burrow. It worked great, and I proceeded to do the same thing for a 3rd and 4th lizard in other locations. I also placed a message on the ledge where I found the first two lizards and another for the third.

While hunting, I noticed two lizards sitting on a ledge, and it turns out this is the same location where I killed the first two. What is strange is:

1. The ledge they are sitting on was not accessible the first time I dropped there. The first time, it was a dead-end tunnel. Now it continues through to the ledge. I know this is the same place I killed the first two lizards because my message is there and I got to it exactly the same way (drop right from bonfire, up the branch to the top then drop off).

2. I already killed these lizards didn't I? I didn't think they respawned, but seems like they do.

I also found that the 3rd lizard was back again when I visited that spot a second time. However, after trying to get that one a few times it is no longer spawning. Same thing with the first two - at first they were there, and now I can't get them to spawn again.

Anyone else have experience getting to these lizards? They seem to respawn, but very inconsistently. Also, what is up with the dead-end tunnel changing? I didn't hit a false wall or anything, it just opened up on its own.

There are two locations that look very similar. One dead ends and contains two Lizards. The other is a tunnel through to the other side and contains five Lizards. You must be in the tunnel section.

I've never yet seen any crystal lizards on the way down to Ash Lake. Maybe it's because I'm concentrating not falling off those darn slippery branches. I will look out for them now though even if it means falling to my death a few times. titanite slabs are not to be sniffed at.

Thanks I must have gotten the two location mixed up - only explanation. I don't see how I did that, but gotta be true. I still wonder about their spawning habits though. I am sure I've seen them burrow in a certain spot, but when I quit and return they just aren't there, or sometimes they are there the first time I try it and then not there the next 10 times. Weird.

It's completely random whether or not they show, but they're always in the same places.

It is because you missed them the first time. They have a counter that goes down when you kill them, but if you didn't kill them on one playthrough the counter stacks. So say you ignored them on the first playthrough, on the second playthrough you can kill them 2 times, but if you got the the first playthrough, then you can only kill them 1 time in the second playthrough.
