Thought you might be interested...
I'm currently sitting in hospital, about to start a six month course which will cure me of a life-threatening peanut allergy. They're going to give me minute traces of peanuts and build up my tolerance, and when the trial I'm on gets reviewed by scientific peers, desensitisation will become a part of the nhs (uk medical care system). For science!

Really? Sorry for your allergy, I really hope this works! I've got no alimentary allergy but being allergic to my cats I can understand
I was under the impression allergies got worse when you kept on eating things you're allergic to?

The opposite is actually true. The longer you keep away from something the more serious and less tolerant you are to it. By giving you minute doses daily, they can gradually build up your resistance to something you are allergic to.

I feel sorry for ya and think that you're crazy going along with this, but good luck, hopefully will build up your tolerance well enough
Rynoa yeah you build tolerance, my friend has starch/sugar intolerance that they didn't discover until he was 17, even though every time he had starch/sugar he felt off colour, now if he has any he's ill for a day, crazy really

Not sure if that's gonna happen, but hopefully he'll be able to walk into a room where people are eating peanuts and not start gagging :|
Wade you ever used your epipen before? (I presume you have one)

No SM, I haven't had to use it before. I've been super careful my whole life to not eat anything with nuts or nut traces, but when I was two I almost died from anaphylactic shock because I ate a peanut butter sandwich.

Your body chemistry is said to change every 10 years..meaning allergies can disappear and appear.
Good luck with that man. I saw a thing about it on the news a couple of years ago. They were doing it to a little kid. at first they started with the tiniest little cumb of a peanut within a year he could eat a whole one. thats has far as they had gotten when they did the news program though.

Re: Thought you might be interested...
I had a major reaction in my teens to a medication I was prescribed. Not fun in the least.....had to be stabbed by an epinephrine needle. I can't imagine having that fear all the time. Really wishing you the best. Fun note to cheer you up.....despite the fact that my trachea was starting to close and I had muscle spasms in my jaw that started to tear skin inside my mouth.....the nurse thought that the needle was going to bother me. She tried to casually walk up to my side concealing the needle and then out of "nowhere" (or her right hand like I knew all along) came a needle to my shoulder. I just looked at her like "really....the needle is the scary part?"

Wow, that's horrendous. It's amazing though that the allergy to peanuts while being so common, is also usually such a harsh reaction. I'm sure there's a reason to it but you never would have thought that such a common allergy is almost always such a serious one.

The worst thing ever though was about 4 years ago, I had to practice administering adrenaline which meant stabbing myself with dummy needles. My 11 year old self was not happy. Edit: thank you, to everyone wishing me luck. I appreciate it.

They make you practice shooting up but with no bite to it for your labours? I'd be pretty pissed if I was you
How long is the process you're undertaking going to last?

Lol, if I injected myself with adrenaline normally, I'd probably die of a heart attack. The course lasts 6 months, and every 2 or 3 weeks I have to travel from Belfast to Cambridge.

Yes i know about the adrenaline, it's a stupid amount in the pens was just trying (and failing) to be funny.
Naturally they couldn't just treat you at your local hospital :| Hope they pay for your travel, they sure have the money to do so.

And now I'm off for 24 hours, because the hotel I'm staying in charges a ridiculous amount for Internet.

. This isn't official treatment - I'm one of the first people to be doing this. This is actually a trial which is going to be scientifically reviewed, and then this type of treatment will be free for anyone anywhere in the uk. And no, the hospital won't pay the travel feesSerious_Much wrote:Yes i know about the adrenaline, it's a stupid amount in the pens was just trying (and failing) to be funny.

Re: Thought you might be interested...
I remember when my allergy doctor asked me to go through peanut exposure trials to try and build immunity a few years ago. However, I declined, I didn't like the thought of taking something that I knew had almost killed me in the past. Good luck to you Wade, your a stronger man than I

If there's one thing the Hulk was good at, it was beating up people from other countries. I miss the stereotyped intolerant wrasslin' days when bad guys just happened to come from whatever country we were on the outs with.

I remember a roman emperor did this, to prevent himself from being poisoned by any who wished to take the "throne". The problem was, when the people rebelled, he tried to poison himself in a last attempt at suicide. Big problem there....
Ignoring my history lesson, good luck my friend!

Re: Thought you might be interested...
Everything is fine so far, my starting dose is one hundredth of a peanut and I should be taking that for 3 weeks, then it'll be stepped up to a fiftieth of a peanut for 3 weeks.
