I'm not sure how you could actually "use" the Pendant to begin with.

Like Snuggly the Crow, as well as tried to do other things...
There is no actual way to 'use' the item

Re: possible use for the pendant
leaving oscar of astora alive, betraying both serpants and trying to push him to the ledge so the crow can take him away? or even just starting the game trying to push him to the crow. or even dropping a sunlight medal infront of oscar, perhaps him and solaire were friends in astora. I think mizuzaki is very cryptic about its use, because its so obvious why would we think of it.. anyone tried killing lord gywn and instead of walking though the fog, or linking the fire, just dark signing? succeeding either throne. i feel like there is.. something. getting yuria in demons souls was very secretive, along with getting the ring of strength (equivilent to havels ring) you had to give thomas a comb you found with no apperent use, and was cryptic, the only way you could find out was by talking to thomas so much he told you about his past, and how he lost his family.

Oscar dies when you talk to him, after you move away from him enough.
That's why you get 100 souls randomly after meeting him, it is from him dying.

I never understood why if you kill him in the beginning though, he'll appear hollowed when you return to the asylum. He's dead so why is he there hollowed?

Yes but any other human NPC you kill, you won't see their hollow form later since their...dead.

Do you get sin for killing the Hollowing out Oscar?
Because, if not, I don't see any difference in killing him or hearing him out.

I dropped him the pendant once when he was depressed after the centipede demon. I figured it might comfort him with fond memories.

Re: possible use for the pendant
The pendant has the greatest ability in the game. Actually, it has the greatest ability in the world! It invokes a maddening curiosity that keeps you playing this game for the sake of figuring out that it does absolutely nothing... ever. Face it you guys got baited hard by Miyazaki. The greatest troll Ive ever witnessed is. Bravo, Miyazaki, Bravo.
On a role playing aspect I think its the one thing that keeps you from going hollow. You start off with no humanity and no goal, by all rights you should be hollowed by the beginning of the game but you weren't. That pendant is the only thing keeping you from going insane and reminding you of a past that will never be expressed through out the entire play through.

Your character is unique. They are the only one who resurrects at/LIGHTS bonfires. It's almost as if you were a "semi-firekeeper". Honestly, I stand by my theory that the character is the God of War.

The funny thing about that is I actually have a character whose back story was just that. But I feel like everyone that is branded with the darksign is in fact damned to the same purgatorial existence that you as the player have been made to go through. This game gives off a heavy feel to purgatory or Limbo (if you have ever played that game). That being said, maybe the pendant is meant to actually keep your mind intact and remind you that this is your fate. This is what is truly happening to you in this world. There is no true end, you complete a goal then you restart at the beginning and infinite loop of fighting and disaster.

You keep your weapons, armor, and knowledge when you loop back, and you never have to get the pendant at all.

Oh I know that is a game design aspect cause who wants to start over from the beginning with nothing to show for it? This is from a purely role-playing and thematic stand point. Which is what I think the pendant represents. You are doomed as a character to never die while constantly being smashed, slashed, stabbed, cursed, and slapped by giant mushrooms. I'm stating more of what the pendant is meant to represent more than what it does in game. Besides didn't the creator say from a role-playing perspective you should either choose the pendant or nothing? I think this reasoning is what he is alluding to.
Just think about it, the first time you killed Gwyn did you feel like the game had actually ended? It didn't feel that way to me. It felt like I accomplished something, yes, but I felt like it was far from an actual end of the game.
I still play it even though everything was collected and all lore pieces were uncovered but I still feel like I haven't finished the game. Like the journey isn't over even with all the play-throughs and that pendant(as hauntingly useless as it is) is proof of me starting this game. It is the memories of the game I've played through so many times that is symbolized by that pendant. It symbolizes the struggle of my noob self maturing into this awesome veteran and that is its use. To embody your struggle through this beautiful game.
Ok so the last part was a bit of a ramble but still I think the pendant is purely thematic in its existence and has no real use.

Re: possible use for the pendant
Yeah, Miyazaki said 'Pendant' or 'No Gift' so I don't think there's anything more to it except that they're the only gifts that literally do nothing, and thus the game will be hardest right from the get-go.

So why does Reah go Hollow? She has a Pendant.
I would want to say she went hollow because she lost sight/ could not complete her goal and that sent her over the edge. But saying that is like deflecting my very reason of the pendant. I guess what you really have to take away from it is the differences of you and Rhea. She had a goal and she fail, You never had a goal and sort of just went along with the ride cause you feel bad for a Knight that saved you or you didnt and you just felt like doing something. Goals in this world are the driving force for undead existence. It may be one of the many factors that would cause one to become undead.
I want to say that that is the real reason behind it but Im not to sure. Its all speculation.
