Basically you have a specific build for them, and then invade/co-op in certain areas and try to rank up. You also get to participate in events and do RP.

It's a basis for creating in game situations of mass online activity, well theoretically and providing something that is different from your usual online experience with dark souls
At any time you can go to places now and see same people over and over, and let's face it most of them are a bit rubbish, and it's all at sl120.
the user covenants have wars that just make online activity increase by an amount, and it provides steady pvp in the specific area at a lower level that would usually be present. Also it's a chance for the guys who like being important to get one over on eachother.
It's all just a bit of fun really, at a different sl than most pvp usually takes place, it's something different.

In addition to what was said, its about Role Playing, fun, and not trying to play to win everytime but for fun.

It became that because some people wanted to score to find a winner. And do note that I said not about winning all the time. Which means everyone is trying to win, but avoiding an arms race for every one to turn into flipping giant moms.

haha, well i don't think sl80 are optimised for full giants really... especially with the upcoming dwgr nerf

Ugh... you have me choking here because I so want to direct you to my own covenant but we tend to be a more RP and rules light meetups for fun and invade lots bunch.
If you want a nice bunch of people RP and some defining without being overly restrictive rules I am afraid I must direct you too the knights (I feel so wrong saying this)

As a guideline.. generally more restrictive covenants have more specific aims. Dark stalkers and Noble knights are some relaxed covenants with a pretty laid back atmosphere, while covenants like Assassins of Vinheim are extremely restrictive, but have a very interesting role and the builds they aim towards seem like a lot of fun to play.
I'd say try many as you can, and find ones you like the best. I'd recommend you give the gravesworn a try, gravelording is a really cool mechanic that's a bit under appreciated, at least run with it for a bit
