Backup Strength weapon? Empty Backup Strength weapon?

Post by Reaperfan Sat Nov 10, 2012 7:01 pm

Currently planning out a Strength build and planning on mainly using the Stone Greataxe to test out some of that new DLC swag winking
But I've been out of the game for a while so looking for confirmation/advice on what backup weapons would be good for a slower build like this. I plan on putting a bow in the off-hand with my shield, so I'm not too worried about ranged combat options, but I'm unsure on what would be best for melee situations when my Greataxe isn't cutting it. I'm thinking of either something long-ranged like a Pike or something fast but close-ranged like a Handaxe. Any feedback would be awesome happy

PS: It will be a fat-rolling build. This is non-negotiable :|

I started using the Man Serpent Greatsword because so many people here "Rant" about how good it is. I have to admit, it has lived up to the hype. It's brutally strong, great moveset, fun to use, and most importantly pretty badass looking.

My next step is to try out the Demon Great Machete.

Oh, and just to be sure, SL 99 is the level to aim for for the arena right? Or is it something else? Or should I even bother aiming for the arena at all as opposed to traditional 120 area-based PvP?

Lots and lots of 120's still going strong out there. Most of the players I've met outside the Arena on PC are even making 120's.

if youre really gonna go to the sl 100 arena then do an sl100. the JGB is pretty good for breaking poise(damage sucks) which you really shouldn have no problem with since youre using the sga but the bleeds is always good specially since people are just gonna run up to you trying to bs and if you unlock and use that thing you can bleed them pretty easy. i use the mace, morningstar and the pickaxe, theyre all pretty much the same and the morning star takes forever to bleed someone unless you stunlockthem, and the strongest out of al of them is the mace so i alwasy go with that since AND it looks so badass and classy, i mean REALLY look at that thing closely, i love it.

i find the crossbows to be better than the bows on a fat rolling(or any kind of roll) str build since theyre much faster than the weapons youre using and it just comes out of nowhere and if you catch them while rolling you can get a headshot and really punish people that either roll alot or try to strafe bs, i have done about 800 damage on a rtsr headshot with a light xbow. which when used with rtsr it is a life saver since people will either back off and if you havent pull it out can mean the difference between winning and losing, even if they fought you before and know you have a xbow since its so damn fast.

i like the handaxe, it does no weigh much and it is quick, people also underestimate it...although that seems to go for mace and morning star aswell.....
    its good though

Since this thread already exists, I'll just piggyback on it and ask my own question: Is there a weapon that scales with Strength (at least at a B rating) that can parry?

If you don't plan on having a shield, you could go dual wielding. I find that it saves Str builds or rather tanks from backstabs by having a horizontal swinging weapon on your offhand. It prevents BS fishers which are a bane for tanks. The Jagged Ghost Blade is great for stunlocking, those simultaneous stabs are so good.

In my own quadruple-wielding Leo tank, i have the Demon's Spear and Handaxe on the offhand and a Pickaxe and JGB on my mainhand. Haven't been backstabbed in a while thanks to the setup.

the only 'str' weapons that can parry are the ghost blades.

not that I know of, sorry.

To OP, I'd just use a crossbow or spear. If you can handle the weight, the dgm shuts down bsers pretty hard, but its hardly what most would call a backup weapon. (my primary concern with any STR weapon is dealing with roll bsing).

My first big strength scaling weapon was the Butcher's Knife, it has pretty nice damage and the moveset isn't bad. Currently, I've learned how OP the BKS is, it's so good I'm using it as a backup weapon on my faith build.

I'm not so big on strength builds. but i'd say go for the Black Knight Sword. Got that if my claymore can't do the job. Does great damage.

If you're going to go with range I would try the Demon's Spear as a backup, it's stronger, longer, and lighter than an elemental Pike since it scales C with Str. It's good on a fat roll toon for providing the space control that a more mobile toon would do just by moving out of the way. The idea is to make your opponent move and create distance rather than move yourself because you're slow and open to BS.

Protip guys...respond to the person who bumped the thread again and is looking for advice themselves winking

My issue has been long solved (I went with a Manus Catalyst and turned it into a Str caster with Dark Sorceries)

EDIT: Should probably follow my own advice, huh? The closest thing to a Srt weapon I know of that can parry is the Jagged Ghost Blade or Ghost blade, but with how weak those scale you may as well just use an elemental dagger or curved sword or something.

has anyone mentioned the pike yet? it's a great way to add reach and attack speed to a dedicated strength build.

the hand axe is fast but has short range and doesn't stun-lock. i would go with one of the hammers instead, like the mace or even the morningstar and reinforced club which both have bleed as well as infinite stun-lock.

halberds, the man-serpent sword and similar seem like they would be more useful when used as a primary weapon.
