SL 1 Run Guide & Tips Empty SL 1 Run Guide & Tips

Post by Sentiel Wed Jan 02, 2013 12:48 pm

This topic is intended to help those of you trying to complete a SL 1 run.

    Everybody plays a bit differently.
Some may wish to use Pyromancies all the way, while some may want to use melee weapons only.
I will post things and tactics that I've used to get my SL 1 to NG+7 and divide them into different sections.

First off, let's start with equipment and how to get it.

    Weapons

Pyromancer has low Dexterity and can't use a lot of great weapons because of that, so you are limited to a very small arsenal of weapons to choose from. I will list only the best here.

Since SL 1 has base stats, it has to use it's melee weapons in one of the elemental upgrade paths. I strongly recommend getting all your melee weapons in both Lightning and Fire, so you can exploit weaknesses of each of your enemies with all of your weapons.

The reason for choosing Fire instead of Chaos is simple. While Chaos does a bit more damage, it relies on your Humanity. It means, that in case you die, your weapon will do less damage than a Fire one by a noticable amount. It's safer to go with Fire, because you will not have to worry about collecting your bloodstain if you die.

    Hand Axe
A rather weak weapon with very fast swings. Thanks to the speed of it's attacks, it will be very usefull in taking care of fast moving enemies, like dogs for example.

You start with this weapon, but you can purchase additional ones from Male Undead Merchant in Undead Burg for 450 Souls.

    Reinforced Club
Strongest weapon a SL 1 can wield with one hand. Not only it has high damage, it also stuns like a Greatsword, making it great for stunlocking enemies, even bosses and with it's Strike attack type it will break through most shields easily. To make it even better, it has Bleed Aux effect, which upon activation damages your enemy for 30% of it's max HP.
Note that Bleed may be inflicted only on living enemies. You can usually tell by blood gushing out of enemies upon hit.

It is sold by Male Undead Merchant in Undead Burg for 350 Souls.

    Light Crossbow
This is a long range weapon, used mainly to manipulate (pull, if you wish) your enemies and to make some fights much easier than with melee, or Pyromancy.

You will need to buy bolts for it and obtain Binoculars to make sniping possible. Using Binoculars and your TV logo, or just guessing where the center of your screen is, you can allign the shots for Crossbows (and other long range attacks).
As of patch 1.06 you will only need Heavy Bolts, because they now do damage on par with Lightning Bolts, yet they are much cheaper and easier to obtain.
They don't fly very far, but the damage is well worth it.

It can be found in Undead Burg on a balcony, which you have to jump to from a roof, or it can be dropped by enemies using the weapon itself.

    Bow
Any you want, really. Just get one, for example as a drop from Bow wielding enemies, or you can find a Longbow in Darkroot Basin on a corpse of a Hunter. You can use Bows for manipulating enemies instead of Light Crossbow. It's much easier and faster this way, but your enemies will receive next to no damage, since you don't have Dexterity to use any Bow properly. There's no need to upgrade it, or worry yourself about arrow types.

Having a bow with you will make fighting Bed of Chaos much easier.

    Shields

Unlike weapons, SL 1 can use wide variety of very usefull shields.
There are many more shields that SL 1 can use than I will post here.

    Balder Shield
It offers a maximum of 75 Stability, which is the highest possible for SL 1. However the shield is heavy, it weights 4.0 WU (Weight Units) and has ver low Damage Reduction against Magic of 20%.

It can be bought from Crestfallen Merchant in Sen's Fortress, or dropped by Balder Knight Hollows wielding it.

    Crest Shield
To make up for Balder Shield's lack of Damage Reduction against Magic, we can use this shield, with it's high Damage Reduction of 80%. However, it has lower Stability, of 66.

It is dropped by hollow Oscar of Astora in Undead Asylum.

    Dragon Crest Shield
Similar to Crest Shield, but instead featuring high Damage Reduction of 85% against Fire, which will be very usefull when fighting some enemies, like Quelaag for example.

It can be found near Undead Dragon in Valley of Drakes.

    Grass Crest Shield
This shield's primary use will not be for blocking (it can be used to block of course), but to provide faster Stamina regeneration. It will be usefull in areas, where you have to cover a lot of ground, so you can do it faster and in cases when you need that extra Stamina for melee fighting.

It can be found on a corpse in Darkroot Basin, near the cave leading to Valley of Drakes.

    Spider Shield
Another shield usable more for it's additional effect, rather than blocking. This shield negates all Poison and Toxic build up while blocking with it, making it ideal for areas like Blighttown.

It can be found on a corpse above the Giant Rat in the Depths, or on a corpse in Valley of Drakes.

    Sanctus
This is a very usefull shield for experienced SL 1 players. While you can't use it for blocking because of stat requirements, it's HP regeneration is invaluable for a very specific tactic, which includes Sanctus, Cursed Body, Dusk Crown Ring, Red Tearstone Ring and Power Within. This allows you to get a 90% damage boost without the fear of having Power Within killing you. It can be boosted by additional 25% with Dragon Torso Stone. However Dragon Torso Stone affects only physical attacks, so If you wish to use spells instead, it would be better to use Crown of Dusk.

It is dropped by black phantom Paladin Leeroy, who invades you in Tomb of Giants, if you're in human form.

    Rings

Apart from rings that you have to get, like Covenant of Artorias, there are many rings that a SL 1 can use. However, I'm trying to keep the character under 25% Equip Burden even without raising Equip Burden limit with rings, so that I can freely switch rings at any given time, without the need to change the rest of my equipment.

Again, just like shields, there are many rings a SL 1 can use, but I will post only the most crucial ones.

    Ring of Favor and Protection
Most important ring in your inventory, that shall be equipped at all times, perhaps with the exception of Four Kings fight.
It's raise of HP and Stamina by additional 20% is a must, because without that additional Stamina you won't be able to block some attacks, even with Balder Shield.

It is dropped by Knight Lautrec of Carim, or can be traded with Snuggly the Crow by giving him a Xanthous Crown.
I recommend getting this ring as soon as possible.

    Red Tearstone Ring
This ring raises damage of all your attacks by 50% when your HP is below 1/5. Since some enemies, especially bosses can kill you with one hit, it's best to fight them with low HP and utilize the effect of this ring to get some extra damage.

It can be found on top of a tower in Valley of Drakes.

    Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring
This ring raises the damage of your Pyromancies and Sorceries (if you decide to use any) by 20% - 25%. It can be a good substitute for Red Tearstone Ring, especially in non boss fights. That additional 20% of damage may be just what you need to kill local enemies with one Combustion.

It can be bought from Griggs of Vinheim for 20,000 Souls.

    Hornet Ring
This ring raises your Critical damage, meaning backstabs and ripostes by additional 30%. Similary to Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring, Hornet Ring may give you just enough damage boost to kill some enemies in one hit and it is also invaluable when fighting Gwyn.

It can be found on a corpse behind the giant tombstone in the area where you fight Great Grey Wolf Sif.

    Ring of Fog
This ring makes your character transparent and hard to see. It is best used to avoid enemies, or to aggro separate enemy from a group, without alerting the rest of them.

It is given to members of Forest Hunter Covenant for killing three players as a reward, or traded with Snuggly the Crow for Skull Lantern.

    Note:
There really are many other rings you can use, each with it's own benefits, but the ones above, are more than enough to complete the game.

    Pyromancy

You can do great damage with your Pyromancies to make lot of your fights easier. SL 1 has 2 Attunement Slots for you to use (number of Attunement Slots can be raised by equipping Seance Rings [White / Darkmoon]), which gives you plenty of possibilities.
All your Pyromancy requires is Souls, to purchase new spells and to make your Pyromancy Flame stronger. However, you must first acquire services of one of the NPC Pyromancers Laurentius, or/and Quelana to strenghten your Pyromancy Flame.

    Combustion
A very simple close range spell, which is very handy at clearing weaker enemies without the need to use melee weapons. It is sold by both NPC Pyromancers, which makes you able to stack 32 casts of the spell.

Sold by both Laurentius and Quelana for 500 Souls each.

    Great Combustion
Stronger version of Combustion with half the casts (8). It is very strong and casts quickly, making it ideal for bossfights and tougher enemies.

Sold by Quelana for 15,000 Souls.

    Great Fireball
Madium range spell with great Area of Effect explosion upon ipmact, or upon reaching maximum range. Another great spell for bossfights, especially if combined with Great Combustion. It is also usefull for handling groups of enemies.
However, the spell has only 4 casts, making some players want to switch to one of it's weaker versions, if they don't trust their aim.

It is sold by Quelana for 20,000 Souls.

    Power Within
This spell raises all your damage by 40% for 100 seconds and raises your Stamina regeneration speed, but it will also drain 1% of your HP per second for the whole time of it's duration.
This means, that unless you heal, the spell will kill you and it cannot be cancelled!
It is important to keep a close watch of your current HP and heal accordingly. While it may seem as a very risky spell, it's damage bonus is well worth it, especially in hard bossfights.

The spell can be found in upper part of Blighttown near Wallhugger Parasite (I really don't know it's name, but you can't miss it).

    Armor

With base HP of SL 1, even if boosted by Ring of Favor and Protection, you really can't afford to get hit. With that in mind, you should focus on mobility, rather than defence, or Poise. It is best to achieve under 25% Equip Burden to get Fast Roll, so you can evade attacks faster and easier. As long as you do that, you can wear whatever you want.

However, there are few pieces of armor, that deserves to be mentioned.

    Crown of Dusk
This a very strange headpiece that raises damage of all spells by 20%, but it also lowers your Magic Defence by 30%. Lowered Magic Defence is of no issue, as you're not supposed to get hit in the first place and you can always use Crest Shield to protect yourself against Magic Damage.

It's effect stacks with Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring.

It is found on a corpse in Darkroot Basin, in the area where you fought a Hydra and later a Golden Crystal Golem (must be defeated first), or where the acess to the DLC areas is found.

    Sunlight Maggot
Another strange headpiece. This one emits light all around it's wearer, which is extremely usefull in dark areas, like Tomb of Giants, as you don't have to bother yourself with using a Skull Lantern (which can be used to get Ring of Fog instead).

It is dropped by one of the insects in shortcut to Lost Izalith.

    Dragon Torso
While this is not actually a piece of armor, it does cover your body. It doesn't provide much in the form of protection, but it allows you to use a roar-like attack, which pushes enemies away from you (similar to Miracle Force) and raises your physical damage by 25% for a few seconds.

However, you cannot wear any armor at all while Dragon Body is active, so if you wish to wear something else you have to die, as death is the only way to remove Dragon Body from your character.

It is given to members of Path of the Dragon Covenant, who have reached the Covenant level of +2, by offering 30 Dragon Scales.
It works even while you're outside of the Covenant, but the damage boost effect will be lowered from 30% to 25%.

    Note:
I have considered adding Masks of Pinwheel, but ever since they got nerfed, their effects aren't that usefull, especially for a SL 1 character.

SL 1 Run Guide & Tips Empty Re: SL 1 Run Guide & Tips

Post by Sentiel Wed Jan 02, 2013 12:48 pm

Now that we have equipment dealt with, we should cover where to go and what to do first.

After you create your beautifull character, you have to pick a Gift, which should, obviously, be the Master Key. You can do SL 1 challenge very well without it, but with it, it will be much faster.

    Undead Asylum

    Incoming Indianna Jones pun.

    Asylum Demon

C'mon, you don't need help with this guy. Spam your Fireballs and spank him with your Hand Axe. big grin

After your misadventures in Undead Asylum ending with your Hand Axe in Asylum Demons fat butt, you can finally go to Lordran.

    Firelink Shrine

Nothing much interesting here. You can pick up Ring of Sacrifice, Firebombs, some soul items and few other stuff, but nothing really worth mentioning. From here though, you should head to New Londo (Firekeeper Soul is optional) and from there to Valley of Drakes.

    Valley of Drakes

With a bit of luck, or simple dying, you can pick up Dragon Crest Shield, Spider Shield and Red Tearstone Ring here, which will make your journey a little easier. No point in fighting drakes, or Undead Dragon at this point. You can sidetrack a bit to Blighttown to meet Quelana and perhaps purchase some Pyromancies, or upgrade your Pyromancy Flame. You can stay there for hours and farm if you wish, but owerpovered Pyromacies won't make this a challenge anymore.

Whatever you do, go up the elevator in Valley of Drakes up to Darkroot Basin. Here, you can pick up Grass Crest Shield, but be carefull of the Black Knight guarding it.

    Darkroot Basin

You should pick up the Longbow on a corpse nearby and kill a Crystal Lizard near the Longbow. It will come in handy later.

You can now return to Firelink Shrine, go above to Undead Parish, or go through Havel's tower to Undead Burg.

I intend to make the challenge through the whole game, not skipping anything. For those of you that want to skip you just got all the tools needed to do so, for others, you just got a lot of equipment, which will make your life a lot easier for first few locations.

That said, I will continue with the usual path to proceed through the game and will only highlight important and notable parts of each location.

    Undead Burg

No matter the route you get here, you should kill Havel for his ring. However, you don't have to kill him, so if he proves to be too much of a challenge, you can try later, or summon some help, which should be still possible.

Go pick up the Light Crossbow in the first part of Undead Burg and go buy Reinforced Club x3 and Hand Axe x1 (some Bolts for the Light Crossbow would be awesome as well) from the Male Undead Merchant.
If you lack Souls to complete the purchase, worry not and simply continue on for now.

You don't need Blue Tearstone Ring, that thing is useless for a SL 1, however, you can kill the Black Knight guarding it for a titanite Chunk.

    Taurus Demon

As you all know, Taurus Demon can be cheesed by repeatedly doing a plunging attack on his head from top of the tower. He may try to stop you on the ladder, but you can ignore him, heal when you get to the top and still do the plunge.

After you split his head open enough times, you can go on ahead.

    Undead Parish

Don't forget to say "Hi" to Solaire. Praise the Sun
Now that you have White Soapstone you can get yourself summoned a few times until you have enough Souls (in case you don't have enough already) to purchase all the weapons needed from Male Undead Merchant.

Go back up and continue to Undead Parish. It doesn't matter if you cut Hellkite's tail (you can't use Drake Sword anyway), kill him, or mount him and fly straight to Kiln.

When you get to the Church don't forget the Firekeeper Souls and free Lautrec. You can reload the game for him to appear in Firelink Shrine, where you can just kick him down to his death and reload the game again to pick up the Ring of Favor and Protection.

After that, you should head to Andre and upgrade your Reinforced Club to +5. You should have enough Souls to do this. If not, then you should go get yourself summoned. SL 1 can be summoned directly for Gargoyles rather easily.

You can also farm Balder Shield from Balder Knights wielding it, if you want.

    Bellfry Gargoyles

With Reinforced Club in both hands you can stunlock to death both Gargoyles, you just need a very good Stamina management. If it fails, you still have Fire Balls.

Gargoyles are good for practicing evading, when they're both on the roof.

    Undead Asylum

You're here for just a few things, namely Crest Shield, Rusted Iron Ring and Peculiar Doll. Killing Black Knights and Stray Demon is optional, but recommended.

    Stray Demon

He may kill you a few times, especially if he decides to do his AoE after you land. You can escape this by pressing O/B button right after you land (this works for every fall), which will cancel the fall recovery animation into a roll.

Just unlock, keep on his back at all times and smack him three times whenever he does that long AoE of his. You can manage to hit him three times, which will activate Bleed and roll away safely.

    Repeat until dead.

If he gets into a corner, he will spam his AoE and kill you. You have to run away from him, so he starts using his long range melee attacks and get close to him again as he gets out of the corner.

    Darkroot Garden

Don't forget to pick up Wolf Ring when you're there. Nothing else important here except for that.

    Moonlight Butterfly

Since you can block it's attacks with Crest Shield, it's just a matter of patience before he lands and meets your Reinforced Club and Fire Balls. It's attacks are either blockable, or very easy to evade, so no further tips needed I suppose.

There's a Divine Ember waiting for you on top of the destroyed tower, embraced by Andre's twin, who dated Medusa.

With the Divine Ember, return to Andre and let him make you a Divine Reinforced Club, if you have some Green titanite Shards. Even a +0 is enough.

    Lower Undead Parish

Free Griggs, he may not teach you anything usefull, but the rings he sells will be very valuable to you. You don't have to purchase them right away though, as they're quite expensive.

    Capra Demon

Most of you are going to die here a lot. The boss here isn't Capra Demon, but his dogs. You can equip Wolf Ring to Poise through the dogs's attacks and kill them, but be carefull that Capra won't kill you instead. Once his dogs are dead taking care of Capra is rather easy. You can also stunlock him to death, but you won't have enough Stamina for this, because his Poise is higher than that of a Gargoyle.

You can cheese the fight by going above the door, where the stair leads, because Capra can't go there and you can spam him with Fire Balls.

    Depths

You should purchase some Moss from Female Undead Merchant above, in the shortcut to Firelink Shrine, just to be safe.
Pick up Large Ember and free Laurentius. If you didn't do it in Valley of Drakes, you can pick the Spider Shield in here as well.
Jump down behind the Butcher's table and plunge attack the Giant Rat, it should kill it. If not, one hit should be more than enough to finish it.
Slide down the waterfall on it's leftmost side, that will take you directly in front of you and you can unlock the shortcut and go straight for the Bonfire.

It's a good idea to return to Andre to make at least +6 Reinforced Club, Divine Reinforced Club (+0 is really enough), +6 Hand Axe and farm enough slime to get the +6 weapons to + 10.

You can also return to Firelink Shrine and purchase new Pyromacies from Laurentius and upgrade your Pyromancy Flame. It all costs tons of Souls, you won't have, so choose wisely.

At this point, I usually make sure I have at least one Green titanite Shard and go to the Catacombs to meet Vamos.

    Catacombs

With Divine Reinforced Club, skeletons here will be easy to deal with. Also, with Wolf Ring, you can Poise through some of their weaker attacks for backstab. There's nothing much worth getting here. You can get Darkmoon Seance Ring, if you wish to challenge Gwyndolin later on and it can be usefull ring for you. Clean the area on your own discretion, you're capable to kill everything in there if you want by now.

After reaching Vamos, it's a good idea to make at least one Fire weapon, depends on your Souls and titanite. You can remake the Divine Reinforced Club into a Fire Reinforced Club, if you want, but it will be usefull later when fighting Nito.

Since we're here, why not kill Pinwheel. It's not like he's dangerous, or anything.

    Pinwheel

    :mask-child:
    :weap-chaos:
    :mask-father:
    Well What is it

Now, let's go back to Depths. Don't forget to purchase, or upgrade anything you need with the extra Souls.

    Darkroot Garden

With your Fire weapon, you can pay a visit to the infamous Forest. With SL 1 you probably won't have to worry about PvP in here, so just run through to Sif.

If you don't have, or don't want to spend 20,000 Souls for Crest of Artorias, you can enter the Forest via Darkroot Basin, but you have to kill Hydra first.

Hydra is fairly easy. Strafe from right to left as it's shots approach you and they will miss. You can lure the shots to kill Crystal Golems, so they won't bother you later. Also, Fire weapons do a lot of damage to them. When you enter the lake, block Hydra's attacks with Balder Shield and burn it with Pyromancy.

    Great Grey Wolf Sif

Again, you can block his attacks with Crest Shield, but it's better to evade. Try to keep as close to him as possbile, preferably stand between his legs, where he can't damage you (well he can step on you for like 20 HP damage) and attack him.
As long as you don't do too many mistakes, this should be also easy.
Make sure to pick up Hornet Ring.

Next, it's time to return to Depths.

    Depths

Again, I recommend to farm titanite to get all your weapons on their current max. You can also get some Humanities from rats here.

After you're satisfied, or just can't stand to look at the slime any more, go satisfy Gaping Dragons hunger.

    Gaping Dragon

I sincerely hope, for your own good, that you killed the Channeler.
If, not...at least it will be interesting.

Anyway, with your current weapons, Gaping Dragon should be a breeze, but don't underestimate him, just because he's a bit slower, he can one shot you with some of his attack. If he got boosted by Channeler's dancing skillz he can kill you probably with anything he does and you get free magic spam sniping as a bonus.

    Blighttown

You should have Spider Shield, or two, upgrade level doesn't matter since local enemies don't do much guard break damage, except for the fat ones, but they are easy to backstab, or parry.
You can switch shields anyway, however Spider Shield is invaluable when fighting blowdart enemies, who inflict Toxic on you.
Make sure to pick Power Within on your way down to Quelaag.
With Rusted Iron Ring, you can explore the area to get some Souls and titanite. You can also pick up a Firekeeper Soul on the way to Valley of Drakes.

    Chaos Witch Quelaag

    Amazing chest ahead!
Since you have Dragon Crest Shield, Quelaag's attacks can be blocked without fear of getting too much damage. You can additionally cast Flesh Sweat for extra protection if you want. You have to rely on your weapons for this fight.
You can use Light Crossbow to hit Quelagg if you're higher than she is, because you can hit her body for extra damage and stun her.
Reinforced Club will do a lot of damage to her and as long as you watch out for lava pools and her AoE attack, she should be fairly easy.

    Ceaseless Discharge

Yes, let's kill this guy since we're already down here shall we?
After you pick up the Gold Hemmed set, wait a bit, so his initial attack won't hit you.
Now, you can either cheese him, by running off to the fog gate, just stop sprinting when you hear his long range attack coming, so it doesn't kill you and wait for him to plunge at you by the fog gate. After that, it's just few hits and Ceaseless falls to his death.
However, if you decide to fight him head on, you will have much more difficult time. Most of his attacks will outright kill you and there's no point in trying to block them.
It's best to stand still until he starts one of his attacks and then start strafing in one direction until his attacks ends and going for a few hits into his...arm afterwards.

When he lifts his arm up, return to your original position, so you have enough space to strafe again.
This will work on most of his attacks.
However, he has two nasty attacks that he rarely does, but if he decides to do so, you will have a bad time.

First attack is his left to right horizontal swong with a few of his arms, that has to be rolled through, or you have to back away from him so it doesn't hit you.

Second attack is when he leans towards you and starts stabing the ground around you with his arms from above you. This attack is very troublesome to evade, but his attacks are weaker than usual and you survive a hit and be able to heal right away. He telegraphs this attack a lot, so you can use the time to run away to safe distance.

    Demon Ruins

We're just going to pick up the Large Fire Ember here and Homeward back to the last Bonfire. No need to fight anything in here. If you're worried about Lesser Capra Demons, you can skip them, by jumping down to the bonfire location. The Rock Worm can be cheesed with Light Crossbow, but it will take you some time. You definitely don't want to try melee it.

Black Knight in Undead Parish should've dropped a Red titanite Chunk, so if you want, you can return to Vamos and make your current fire weapon to +6.

    Sen's Fortress

Now that both bells have been rung, it's time for some pendulum fun.
There's lot to do in Sen's, like collecting Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring, Gold Serpent Ring. Don't forget to kill all the giants for titanite Chunks. Don't forget to talk to Siegmeyer, so you can get a titanite Slab from him later.

If you decide to fight titanite Demons for some reason, I recommend using Light Crossbow and Pyromancies. After you run out of casts, don't be ashamed to Homeward back to replenish your spells. It's very risky to take them on with melee, especially those two below Logan.

If you have Souls to spare, you can buy a few Green Blossoms from Crestfallen Merchant. They are very handy if you need to run through some areas, or if you're not using Power Within.

    Iron Golem

Summon Iron Tarkus and be amazed how he kills Iron Golem without you, lifitng a finger.

For those that think Tarkus is OP and want a fair fight with Iron Golem, it's best to start hitting his legs with Reinforced Club. It will make Golem stunned very soon and then it's only a question of time before you topple him in his back. Start attacking his arm until he lies down and then hit his head for some major damage.

Another good strategy is to simply spam your Pyromacies at him, which is also much safer and faster way to fight him.

    Anor Londo

This place is the worst part for my SL 1 runs.
Light Crossbow will make short work out of amost of enemies in the first parts. Ignore Sentinel, engaging them will not give you anything but frustration.
Make sure to create some Lightning weapons from Giant Blacksmith and you can buy some Twinkling titanite to upgrade your shields, if you have Souls to spare. Again, don't forget to talk to Onionbro.

If you want to kill Lautrec at this point, it's best to use Ring of Fog and suprise his group with a Great Fireball, or two and keep spamming Great Combustion until they die.

    Ornstein & Smough

This is the worst bossfight for my SL 1 runs, because Ornstein tends to get all sorts of laggy and change his attacks as he pleases.
It's generally better to kill him forst and fight Super Smough, rather than Super Ornstein. Smough can get easily stuck behind one of the pillars and you can safely throw Fireballs at him, or shoot him with your Light Crossbow. Use this trategy to kill Ornstein while Smough keeps hammering a pillar and then repeat it to kill his Super Saiyan version.

If you decide to fight Super Ornstein instead, you can wait for him to do his casual stroll, when he starts to walk, like he doesn't care about you and use it to hit Smough a few times.
After Smough bites the dust, try luring Super Ornstein into one his longer attack, especially his buttslam and use ranged attacks. It's not terribly hard, unless he starts to lag in his lunging attack, but it will take you more time to kill him, as he's faster than Smough and doesn't do as many mistakes.

    Amazing chest ahead #2.
    Stop playing with those Binoculars!

To be continued in the next post.

SL 1 Run Guide & Tips Empty Re: SL 1 Run Guide & Tips

Post by Sentiel Wed Jan 02, 2013 12:49 pm

Now that you have Lordvessel you can go and place it with Frampt, but for those, who want to be Darkwraiths, let's go to New Londo first.

    New Londo

You can pick four Transient Curses right at the start. You might as well pick up the Cursebite Ring, for fighting Seath, just to be safe.
You can skip a lot of this location by doing a few well placed jumps, but you might want titanite Chunks dropped by Darkwraiths and Very Large Ember.

    Four Kings

Another hard fight. You might want to upgrade your equipment before attempting this fight, as speed is very important here.
Get as close as possible to one of the Kings and try to stick there, because their attack do less damage if you're close to them. You will probably have to block their AoE and homing spells with Crest Shield, however, you should evade their grabbing attack. You can do so by strafing to one side and rolling just as the King gets close. The attack won't kill you if you have full HP, but it's long and you really can't afford to have more than one King at a time there, or they will slaughter you.

I don't recommend evading their homing spell, because it's bugged. Even if you evade it and it disappears, it's actually still there. Some of you may experienced that they got hit by a purple effect attack all of a sudden with no warning. I've heard claims, that it happens when you fight Four Kings for too long. Nope, it's just their homing spell gone invisible on you. So it's better to run at it and block it with Crest Shield.

I advise you against summoning Beatrice, because summons raise HP of area boss, so the fight isn't too easy, but unlike player summons, NPC summons are usually useless (except for Tarkus, with him, the host is the useless one in there) and definitely not worth having to deal with higher HP of the boss.

After the fight, go place the Lordvessel, if you haven't already done so.

Now, you can go to the rest of the locations in any order you want, well you can do that from the start anyway. But it would be a good idea to stay in New Londo to get some Chunks and upgrade all your stuff before proceeding further.

    Duke's Archives

I dislike this place, because of some problem with lock-on, making the lock-on range smaller than in most locations and I hate those Crystal Hollows. That's why I visit it first, to be done with it.

Make sure to save Sieglinde from Golden Crystal Golem and talk to her later in Firelink Shrine. Also, kill the Crystal Golem at the start of Archives for Broken Pendant.

You can farm Pisacas for some Humanity if you want, since you will likely want to use the Shortcut to Lost Izalith later.

This is treasure cave for Int builds, so nothing noteworthy for Pyromancer here.

    Seath the Scaleless

Since you don't need his tail, this fight is very easy. Albeit being a dragon, Seath is weak against Fire, so just burn him until he's nice and crispy.

Take care about his Curse attacks though, especially if you have no Humanity. You can equip Antiquated Set for high Curse resistances, or Cursebite Ring.

    Lost Izalith

I hope you have 30 Humanity to give to Quelaan, or you will have to go through a lot of trouble.

Well, you can go through the lava area with no troubles now, that the enemies have next to no aggro range.

Make sure to talk to Onionbro and help him with Chaos Eaters. There's also a Red titanite Slab down there and you can pick Chaos Fire Whip near boss fog and Sunlight Maggot in the shortcut leading to Demon Ruins.

I will cover the bosses needed to go to Lost Izalith the normal route first.

    Demon Firesage

You should be able to block, or evade his opening attack.
He's the same as Stray Demon, only that this one likes to jump a lot more. Despite his name and appearances, his attacks deal Magic damage (it makes no sense, I know), so use Crest Shield if you need to block.

Again, keep to his back and try to bleed him, but I wouldn't recommend using Pyromancies. Since he's on fire, I never thought about using Pyromancy on him until now, that I'm writting this, so I have no idea what will happen if you use it on him.

    Centipede Demon

This fight can go horribly wrong, because Centipede loves to spam his long range arm poke. You can use it against him though. If you roll away and manage to attack his arm, you can cut it off and get Orange Charred Ring. You can cut his tail as well for the ring, but you can get it only once and both parts, that you cut off, will regenerate in time. they are also sentient and you have to kill them once you cut them off, or they will attack you. Discusting, right?

I recommend not using lock-on in this fight as camera usually goes crazy and you can't see what's going on.

You can lure him to a small part of land on the right of the fog gate, where you can fight him without worrying about the lava.

You should get below him and attack his leg, or behind him and attack his tail, but be carefull as he likes to stomp on you, or jump in air and throw fireballs down at you. He telegraphs both attacks, so they're easy to avoid.

    Bed of Chaos

I liked Dragon God, but this fight is just silly, so let's cheese it.
Stick to the wall and go for it's right arm...whatever that thing is...first. After you hit it, reload the game. It will put you in front of the boss fog.

Now, again, stick to the wall and go for the left arm. When you reach the second pillar, take your Bow out and start shooting at the arm. There's a very small window you can use to sneak an arrow in and spare yourself the trouble of going there personally. It may take you some time, but it's really much easier than doing it melee.
After you suceed, reload the game again.

Wait for it to do it's Fire Storm. The fire pillars are easy to avoid, because you can see where they will appear before they actually do so.

After doing so, lure it's hands to do a sweeping attack by going close enough and retreating. Right after they do the attack, run towards it and roll down on the branch leading to Bed of Chaos. Quickly make your way inside, before it decides to do Fire Storm again and FINISH HER! .

    Tomb of the Giants

With Sunlight Maggot and enough Fireballs, you can breeze through here and dispatch enemies outside their aggro range.

After the first fog, there's a treasure behind an archer, jump down to a place with Silver Serpent Ring and from there, you can jump down all the way to Nito's area.

Don't forget to defeat Paladin Leeroy, but be carefull so you don't accidentaly throw him down from the ledge, or you won't get Sanctus.

    Gravelord Nito

If you still have your Divine weapon, you can permanently kill his skeletons. They're weaker than the usual bunch too. Even so, it would best not to aggro the big ones in the back of the cave.

Nito himself is invulnerable if you attack him from his sides, or back. You must attack him from front, which is no problem. His attacks are very slow and he telegraphs everything he does. Only problem is his AoE blast, which is magic and thus can be blocked with Crest Shield for minimal damage.

Take care not to get hit, because his attacks inflict Toxic, which can be deadly, especially with your HP.

Now that all Lords are dead, let's do the optional locations, before going to Kiln.

    Painted World of Ariamis

This is a tough location to fully clear, but you can skip large portions of it. After you kill your first few hollows and get on the thin bridge, you can jump down the plaza with the statue and Phalanx enemies. Go through fog gate and up the stairs to fight Undead Dragon, which you can chesse with Light Crossbow. Jump attack his legs and jump down. Congratulations, you're in front of boss fog. Just move a bit, or a Berenike Knight will fall on your head.

I would recommend killing Xanthous King Jeremiah to collect his armor set later, so you can trade Xanthous Crown for another Ring of Favor and Protection, if you need new one.

You can also pick up some armor sets and Fire Surge, but they're not really worth the trouble if you ask me.

    Crossbreed Priscilla

I'm actually using Binoculars here more ofthen than with Gwynevere.

I hate fighting her, but I guess I will give you bloodthirsty maniacs some tips as well.

Hours of playing TSNE in MGO tought me how to track my enemy by their footprints. You don't need tracking skills, but do look on the snow for her footprints. When they stop and appear both next to each other, Priscilla will do a horizontal sweep attack, which is almost everything she does. Use this to roll behind her and attack her a few times, but roll away quickly, or she will hit you with her spin attack.

Repeat this until she gets visible, then the fight gets a lot easier.

If you don't want to bother yourself with tracking her, just use Great Fireball and other AoE spells to hit her. You can open the fight with Fire Tempest for some mean damage as well.

Getting hit by her Scythe is instakill, if you don't have enough Bleed resistance to trigger Bleed in one hit on you.

    Dark Sun Gwyndolin

If you don't have Darkmoon Seance Ring, you can go kill Gwynevere and the path to Gwyndolin will be open.
(Seriously, what parent puts his own name into his childrens names?)

Don't try to block his magic attack, you don't have enough Stamina for full hit. Use pillars to cover from small spells and roll from one pillar to another to evade the big ones. Wait for him to raise himself on his snake legs (yuck!) and run at him in zigzaging pattern, so he doesn't hit you with his bow machine gun. You can hit him several times like this.

Don't stop hitting if he disappears, he will still get the damage, even if you hit the air instead. Silly, I know...

That's all from the main game, so let's hit the DLC.

    Sanctuary Guardian

This is one annoying spammer if you ask me. It's safest to just wait for it's longer attacks and throw some Pyromancies on it. Be carefull of his tail as it will Poison you in one hit, unless you got high Poison Resistance.

Lightning attacks do a AoE effect when they hit water, so keep that in mind when you evade it's spam.

You can block it's melee combo and other attacks with Balder Shield and have enough Stamina to punish it.

    Royal Wood

This a good place to use pulling and aggro manipulation, so you don't get ganked by enemies in here. Especially Stone Giants will be pain to deal with, since you do little damage to them.

Using Ring of Fog and Bow works wonders in here and you can kill enemies slowly, one by one with almost no risk at all.

You can also just run through the whole area. While normal enemies can actually outrun you, they usually get tired soon and have to stop and take a sip of water.

    Knight Artorias

You will have troubles blocking his attacks, so you must evade in times.
Don't let him pull off his bossting, or he will slaughter you. Also, when he starts boosting, his defences and reistances are higher than nromal, so don't waste your spells. Instead, go hit him with Reinforced Club, a few hits will stagger him and cancel his boost.

It's best to attack him after he does his long stabbing attack, or his long range horizontal sweep attack. You can sneak in a Great Fireball if you time it well enough.

    Oolacile Township

Casters here can probably one shot you, so either evade, or use Crest Shield. If you pick up the Silver Pendant you can use that instead and it will be handy for fighting Manus.
Most of this location is easy, but you have to be carefull and use aggro manipulation a few times.
Make sure to pick up the Crest Key, so Gough can shoot down Kalameet for you.

    Chasm of the Abyss

There are two important things in here.
Black Flame and Sif. Freeing Sif will enable you to summon him to fight Manus with you. While Sif does little damage, he can get Manus' attention and give you some time to breathe from his relentless attacks.

    Manus, Father of the Abyss

Manus is a evade heavy boss. Shields won't do you much good in here.
Try to keep backpedaling from him, but keep a close watch on the arena's walls, so he doesn't corner you.
It's safest to attack after he slams his hand vertically down at you and after his combo attack. You can get some Pyromacies in there on those occasions as well.

His magic attacks are evadable, but it's hard to guess the distances in that dark. Your best bet is the Silver Pendant.

    Black Dragon Kalameet

Kalameet may prove to be the hardest fight for many SL 1 players.
He has extremely high HP, damage and resistances, making fighting him very long and one mistake can kill you.

Seriosuly, he reminds me of Monster Hunter games. Guess, that's why I like to fight him so much. Even with SL 120, he's still fun to fight.
Although he is very susceptible to lag and does some terrible crap at times, like flying while facing a wall etc.

All of his attacks are easy to evade and you can block his basic attacks with Balder Shield. Be very mindfull about your surroundings, so he doesn't push you against a wall. If you can't evade his breath, use Crest Shield. Despite it's appearances, Kalameet's breath does Magic damage (strange, I know). You can block some of the weaker versions, but it will probably do a guard break and kill you, so don't rely on it.

This fight is really about patience, as it can be very long.

Now, that should be everything and it's time to go to Kiln.

    Gwyn, Lord of Cinder

Equip Hornet Ring, Fire Reinforced Club (yes Fire, remember, he's the guy throwing lightning bolts in the opening) and parry him.
    Parry, riposte, repeat.
It's kinda sad actually, but what can we do.

If you're not confident enough to parry him, you can fight him normally, but it will be much harder as this guy has unlimited Stamina, can jump like a horny rabbit and his sword has reach like a spear. You can block one, or two of his attacks with Dragon Crest Shield, but as I said, he's got unlimited Stamina, so he will get through and kill you very quickly.

Pyromancy does well against him and you can actually stagger him, although it's a bit risky.

    YOU DEFEATED
Congratulations, slayer of demons, you have achieved the highest honor PvE can offer to you.

I hope you will enjoy reading this as much as I've enjoyed writting it and it will actually help someone trying for a SL 1 challenge.

Please, forgive any language and other errors, that I've made and contact me, so I can make the topic, even better.

I hope you don't mind that I used links to other wiki sites. I just couldn't find what I was looking for here, so I used other sites. If it will be a problem I can remove the links, or replace them.

I'm 99% sure about it. The issue is that most people try it while being close to an enemy, but if you do so, because the enemy is staggered by the roar, there is a chance you're causing counter damage, and thus your damage is increased, but not because of the roar buff, but because you're doing a counter attack. Yes, you can do counter attacks with spells.

And for the record, OUR WIKI, the wiki THIS FORUM belongs to, is:
    http://darksoulswiki.wikispaces.com/Path+of+the+Dragon

There you can read a part that states that it increases the damage of only fast-cast spells, now, why do I think this is not true? Because it names things like WoG and GC, which must be casted close and fast, thus they need to be cast just after staggering the enemy with the Roar. It's counter damage. I'm gonna edit the wiki to correct this if you can confirm what I said.

I've tested it with Black Flame (I was too lazy to switch it for GC) and it is just like you said. I did extra damage on enemies stunned with the roar, but when I used BF on enemies that weren't stunned, with the boost still active (Lingering Dragoncrest Ring makes the effect last longer) it did same damage as without using the roar at all.

The conclusion is that Dragon Roar does NOT affect spells, at least Pyromancies.

Physical attacks were affected, even long range attacks, like Crossbow shots.

    About the wiki.
I don't really care to be honest as I see no real point in having three wikis...if there isn't even more. I care about the information, not the source, so if other sites give me the desired information I link them instead of this wiki, however I still try to prioritize this wiki over others.

This one has the best community so far.

I put Dragon Torso Stone in search, this is what I got and it has no relevant information to the topic at hand, so I used other wikis.
I'm the type that doesn't bother searching, if it's not where I think it should be, it doesn't exist for me. Like looking in Google anywhere after the first page of search results. big grin

You can notice I always try to point to a single thing, not a whole bunch, so the reader doesn't have to list through whole Path of Dragon Covenant page, or whole Antiquated Set to find what I'm talking about, rather s/he can just click and find quick references and additional information about the specific thing I'm writing about.

    Yes.
Four Kings aren't as terrible as most believe. You just have to get close, then their attacks do a lot less damage. No idea why though, but nevermind. You can block them, but they do partially magical damage, so Crest Shield is a must, but I prefer to evade their attacks, which is a lot easier to do as well.

The only issues with them is to kill each one fast enough so the others don't have time to spawn and some of their attacks that just have to be blocked, like their AoE, or those homing projectiles. Crest Shield can do it, even on NG+7, but it will devastate you.

My experience was tanking worked find on NG, but on NG+ I took too much damage, even with the stone armor or whatever and using the crest shield. The other advantage to dodging is you can wear GC shield for more stamina.

On NG, they can be blocked, even tanked, although I have little experience doing that.
On higher NG, it won't work and you have to evade.

I usually put Grass Crest Shield on my back, go with Red Tearstone effect and mash them with Reinforced Club and occassional Pyromancy.

The only problem is their attacks that you have to block, so I usually heal up and block it with a weapon. It won't kill me, but it will damage me enough to let Red Tearstone turn on again.

    Thank you very much.

I think it needs some work, especailly in the writting department, to get a sticky, or to get published on the wiki. happy

Will bump this thread with a bit of a brag. NG++ 4 Kings completed. Completely exhilarating. I found using great combustion but finishing each king off with lightning hand axe worked well - the pyro does more damage, but the axe lets you get off extra damage as they are disappearing. Now I have a bunch of souls that are completely useless.

Congrats on your epic feat! cheers

Using the time when each King dies to deal additional damage to their shared life bar is a good idea. I usually just put two more GC in there. twisted

It took me very long. Around twenty, or so hours. Most of the time was consumed by farming to upgrade all the gear I'm using. If I didn't have to farm, I guess it would take me around three to four hours.
