R1 spamming isn't that big of a deal.. If you're that skilled of a player you should have no problem countering it. If you're a quick/mid roll char you can just roll out of it.. Or telegraph the R1 and parry. Personally I parry, roll around, don't do much shield turtling. R2 gets you backstabbed anyway.. Especially with anything other than a straight sword.
