Didn't know if I should post this in "shield contest" or not, but figured no, as it only stems from an idea my son, brother, and I had while discussing the shields we would like to make, and not the actual contest.
My design, "Tower of the Forgotten" came from an idea that the shield is basically part of a miniaturized prison tower, and it's held by some boss that, if you're not careful, would pull you into the tower, imprisoning you. Those who get pulled into the tower are meant to be forgotten, hence the name. The player then has to escape this place, but it's not as easy as it sounds (is anything in a "Souls" game?). What seems like a normal prison tower is actually a magic dungeon, and unless you perform tasks in the correct order, you wind up opening a door, only to find yourself back where you started, sort of like King Koopa's castle in Super Mario Brothers, where you have to enter the pipes in the correct order or the level just repeats infinitely. Also, there is no bonfire here. You die, or otherwise screw up, you go back to the start, a la Demon's Souls. When you escape, the shield breaks and you fight the boss.
IF, however, you manage to avoid being sucked in and you defeat the boss, you get the shield (minus its magical imprisoning properties, of course.)
So one way, you get to experience a unique level, the other way you get a unique item. Would be cool for multiple play-throughs.
Another idea (and this is something From would totally do) is a shield that binds itself to you once you equip it. The only way to get it off is to somehow break the curse, like certain cursed items from D&D. Nothing about the shield gives you any hint that it will do this, but once you equip it, your stuck with it until you find the right way to get it off. The stats would be decent, but not overly amazing so it wouldn't be a death-sentence to wear it.
Anyway, just dreaming, no real point to this thread.
