A LGBT thread might be a bit much, and invite too much controversy.  We sort of touched on the subjects in the Gender Issues thread, but that also saw people flaming members of the community and people getting really out of hand with what they were saying.  I don't think the forum can currently handle such a thing, it's why I'm not creating a religious tolerance and understanding thread currently, I'm very afraid of how people will act in it.  

I'd imagine we have LGBT members, in fact I think I know some, but they're probably just not open about it or care enough about it.

I would disagree, people have a right to disagree, like Vinyl did here, but not to be outright nasty. It's 2013 after all. A LGBT thread is asking very little, to be honest.

I'd even make it myself, despite not being LGBT myself, if I could get the Ok.

I think it's not as much giving the a thread to have for their own, as much as it could look like purposeful segregation...

Also I don't see WHY we need a thread for it. Like you said, it's the modern age and noone with decent ideas about society cares what people are.. Surely pointing it out is in fact detrimental? No need to pigeonhole people by making the thread, in my opinion.. But then again I don't really know what the point of an LGBT thread would be.
