Straight swords for pvp?
Just looking for some feedback, thinking about using for example the barbed straight sword, however it seems i tend to like weapons with alot of reach. This seems to be the general thought process as i see alot of washing poles, halbreds etc. So is there any place for straight swords in pvp? How would it altar your fighting strategy to use a straight sword?

Skirmish fighting with heavy combo's whenever you get the opening. I also recommend a powerful buff

Sounds good. Do you think it can be affective? Have you ever used one in pvp?

Re: Straight swords for pvp?
I used a Sunlight Straight Sword on one of my Dex builds. They work good if used with a shield. Other than that I don't know how to use them well. Start with a Balder Side Sword as it gets good scaling and it's one of the longest straight swords.

Re: Straight swords for pvp?
Most straight swords are viable, but the balder side sword is awesome in pvp because of its reach and strong thrust attack. I use a chaos +5, but if you do a dex build a +15 gets A scaling and buffs really well with SLB/DMB/CMW etc. I could write 10 pages on how great this weapon is, but suggest you just play around with it and see. I think the reason you don't see many is that most folks have written off straight swords without really testing them much. This also works to your benefit in pvp, because only a few opponents will realize how dangerous you are.

I write them off because I don't like how far forward you move with each attack. The balder side sword is very dangerous, I just don't like the straight sword moveset. Shame really, because the silver knight straight sword is the coolest weapon in the game.

Re: Straight swords for pvp?
Yeah, that's the tradeoff for the reach. But being able to side-step a washing pole swipe and R2 stab them in return at the same distance is pretty great. And the sprint R1 slash has a burst of speed at the end where combined with the sword's reach you can actually hit people running away from you at full speed/DWGR sub-50% encumbrance even if you can't catch them to backstab them. I've lost track of how many people have lost footraces to me that way.

Re: Straight swords for pvp?
I'd actually say that straight swords are one of my favorite types of weapon. They have an attack for every situation, and are great for getting that final hit in. The one handed running and two handed strong attacks are both great dead angles, and the one handed strong is as safe and powerful spacing tool.

Re: Straight swords for pvp?
I consider the balder side sword a rapier. It's basicly the Estoc, but the strong attack is thrust while the estoc is a slash. That's it.
real straight swords such as Sunlight, Darksword, barbed sword and others are viable in PVP even without a buff. Since they have C str C dex scaling it would be nice to put balanced stats like 30 str and 30 dex, or even a 40/40 build. More damage than a katana, better moveset in my opinion.

Re: Straight swords for pvp?
Well you conider wrong my friend. The BSS R1 moveset is almost identical to the longsword r1 movie set.. The only real difference is that the longswords second r2 is a slash and the BSS keeps thrusting and the BSS has more reach. I can see comparing the r2 to a rapier..i guess..but an estoc? The movesets are nothing alike. Its a straight sword bro. edit: the estoc r1 is like a fast version of spamming the BSS r2? Thats the only similarity i see..and its still pretty different..
sunlight and barbed sword are pretty good but the darksword r2 is terrible...looks cool but good luck hitting someone in pvp...its slow predictable and you gotta be right next to them. Though i do like to use it...cause it looks cool.
silver knight sword is pretty good too.

Re: Straight swords for pvp?
the darksword R2 is terrible? oh contrare the darksword R2 Is a bait you swing when they are out of range they rush in and the second swing catches them
that and the second part is amazing for dead angling if your opponent is using a greatshield and turtling(would not recommend if they can parry)

Like I said, they're very similar, the difference is that the R1 for the balder is a swing and for the estoc is a thrust, the R2 for the balder is a thrust while for the estoc is a swing. Thats it.

Re: Straight swords for pvp?
lol yeah but they are different kinds of swings and thrust...looking at it that way they all might as well be an uchi without bleed
They sure feel alot different when i switch between them anyway. I tried an estoc out for a bit before i got my BSS...hated it love BSS..also the r1 for estoc can be done behind shield right?

Try a plunging attack with the Estoc, balder side sword, and a lognsword and you will see what I'm talking about

Re: Straight swords for pvp?
I like the estoc and sometimes use it offhand, but the balder side sword blows it out of the water. The estoc is for backstabs and winning formal duels, the balder side sword is for punishing bosses and winning pvp invasions. I'm actually torn about singing the balder side sword praises because I want it all to myself. Also, like the Matrix, no one can be told what the balder side sword is, they have to see it for themselves. With its comically low stat requirements (10 str, 14 dex) and easy availability early in the game, everyone should try the sword at least one runthrough. Without putting too fine a point on it, I regret every moment I ever played DkS before I started using the bss.

Re: Straight swords for pvp?
Any weapon is viable, you just need to learn it and work around it. I'd imagine the barbed straight sword would be best with an aggressive build, forcing bleed and pressuring the target. It even has the swiping r2s that cover a decent amount of ground if they try to back away even more.

Re: Straight swords for pvp?
The barbed sword has reduced reach, which in turn makes dead angling, stabbing etc exponentially harder. Folks should try both, but to me the bleed is not worth losing all that reach. You also get parried a lot more, because you have to be much closer to the target to hit.

Re: Straight swords for pvp?
Well ive been using the barbed, will test it some in pvp, but you are right befowler, the reach could be an issue. Need to get my hands on the bss and try it out... ultimately as some have said it all comes down to what your personally comfortable with.
