Everyone knows the abyss first came into Oolacile through the prison, because that is how you first access the Chasm of the Abyss, therefore the first residents that were affected where the prisoners.
That is why they attack you with a ball and chain. The spear looking thing, I am guessing its some sort of column that they were chained to.
You can still see the hosts legs. Maybe it's a more advanced form of the bloated head.
As far as the chain armor, I am not sure about the lore perspective but FROM may have first considered them some sort of Oolacile soldiers sent to stop the spread of the Abyss when it Manus woke up. However, I don't think this is correct simply because his name says "Prisoner" and now "warrior" or something similar.
