I'm really looking forward to this game, although the combat does not seem to be my preferred type. I'll avoid the demo, but please post some impressions after playing it.

Re: Official Ni No Kuni Thread
so i played both missions and i gotta say i like it a lot, the combat is fast paced and keeps you on your toes, the monster designs are really good imo, both missions are only 25 mins which kinda sucks since that's when it starts getting really good and specially on the first mission after killing the boss and go out to the world i only had 2 mins left, so wanted to explore more. from what ive seen and played i think it is gonna be worth the wait and damn we needed a game like this since there hasnt been a great rpg in a while.

Re: Official Ni No Kuni Thread
lol but i am, i think the game is gonna be great. i love the way the enemies let you know you should either dodge or block which really makes you pay attention to what the enemies are doing. i really wanna know how to capture(?) familiars, really looking forward for that. i am not gonna get too excited though lol.

Re: Official Ni No Kuni Thread
I've also been waiting for this game for a long time, and the demo didn't disappoint. I found the combat a little clunky, to be honest, but good enough. What I'm looking forward to most is the story, and I love the art style (the overworld map is gorgeous!), so I'll definitely be picking it up come January.

Re: Official Ni No Kuni Thread
the artwork is beautiful which was i knew it would be since studio ghibli worked on it and it did not disappoint. combat might seem a littl eclunky in the beginning but once you get the hang of it it's really good.

Re: Official Ni No Kuni Thread
Duuuuude combat is super similar to Digimon World!!!! You give them commands to your Digimon just like the familiars of Ni No Kuni!!!!! The graphics are f*cking beautiful man. I'm buying this game day one.

Re: Official Ni No Kuni Thread
It's not really that I need to get the hang of it, just that there are standard RPG combat mechanics in there that I don't particularly care for. Like enemies' spells that attack in front of them, but you still get hit even though you're behind them. Special moves, too, that completely ignore your battle placement and just lump everyone together in a cutscene. Those aren't as bad because they're telegraphed so you can block in time, but regular attacks and spells hitting where they're not supposed to is annoying.
@Emergence
It won't spoil the game, so might as well get a taste now!

Re: Official Ni No Kuni Thread
i know, you think they wouldve leraned from white knight chronicles but its not that bad.
@E the thing i liked about it iss that it doesn spoil anything, i was relieved to find out they didnt spoil the openingscene by having only missions and cutting straight to them.

It's because you are treating it like an action RPG. It's similar to FFXII combat your position pretty much doesn't affect the battle (except physical attacks). Imagine you're in a classic turn based RPG but the action it's there to make it look awesome.

Re: Official Ni No Kuni Thread
^I know, that's why I said standard RPG combat mechanics! But even back when I played FFXII I found it detracted from gameplay, so you'd think they'd have changed it by now. What's the point of giving us free control over our character during battle if your position largely doesn't matter?

Re: Official Ni No Kuni Thread
For physical attacks it does, yes. But for spells and such, as far as I noticed, it doesn't. For example, I think it was the first boss, he has a breath attack that stuns you. Being behind him I ignored the prompt and kept whacking him in the buttocks, but then I got stunned from his breath.
Like I said, it's not going to be a deal breaker by any means, especially since it's the story and art style that are drawing me most, but it would've been nice if the combat mechanics were a little more evolved.

Re: Official Ni No Kuni Thread
Maybe it's just the status effect attacks, then. But the uncertainty will mean I'll just have to defend all the time, not to risk it. Then I'll feel like a noob when I'll see other players behind a boss ignore certain attacks I always bother blocking!
