Yes, it really is worth it, and if you win as the old monk you can keep the custard tornado! 
I was only summoned 2 times by the Old Monk, on my second time...I decided to be trollololol, I used Foes ring+Clever Rats Ring + Second chance...+morion blade as left handed...oh yeaaaaa, 2 shotted him like a boss

I've not been back on it long so I only had weps you can get early on.
Im going to try a sl1 run so the head wrappings would help a lot with that run.

I got it again for awhile, i was on and me and another guy kept dueling actually. Me as the old monk. He would almost kill me. Then stop, and let me heal. It was great. That tornado hat is so amazing to fight with. Those randomish homing soul shots it spits out saved me so many times and turned the tables alot to.

Yes, I always love getting summoned for the fight.
If you want to get into the fight quickly, I'd recommend that you make a SL 40-60 character, you should get summoned every 2-3 minutes.

I have a question about this old monk thing:
I don't understand why I get summoned as a black phantom! I have put down my blue sign to help somebody!? Then the next question: Is this guy that fight against me a real person or is this only a computer char?
BTW: in ng I got summoned 3 times! Now I'm in ng+ and are curious how many times I get summoned thin time, I'm sl 108 now.
And the most strange thing: After defeating this old monk I was put back into world 1-4! How strange is that? I thought I should be put back into world 3-3!

It happens anywhere in Latria. Regardless of what sign you have down, if you trying to connect with other players there's a chance you'll be summoned as the Old Monk boss. Even if you were trying to co-op. The person you fight when you are summoned this way is a real person. They essentially made a PvP match as a boss fight.
As to the going back to 1-4 instead of where you were summoned...I have no idea. Probably some weird coding in the game due to the unique manner of connectivity with the boss fight.

Oh man, whenever I'm summoned as the Old Monk's successor, I just feel like a complete badass having a tornado head with a large amount of health and being able to use the unique yellow homing soul arrows. A fight like that needs to come back in Dark Souls II.

I have tried this fight appr. 5 times and always is the same guy behind the fog gate with claws. He always beat me! So boring and frustrating! I also really hate this f*** cut scene! So boring! Alway the same! One cannot skip this!

He probably ended up in world 1-4 if that's where he left his stain. If he won the fight you revive where your stain is. It depends on where you went hollow. If he lost, then he would go to where he dropped blue

well the new white in editor is really nice - now i can see what i write...but micha is right, i had to switch editor mode to be able to write not in the quoted text.
btt: LOL the guy with the claws is the AI oponent, if there is nobody to summon, or offline mode. He's easy prey and i'm always disapointed, if i have to execute him and let him kill me, waiting for a real boss
Perhaps there was a real player that cosplayed the AI Old Monk summon....then it's normal to lose a fight.
If i meet grass eating guys in Old Monks fight, i take out my weapon with the highest damage and preferable smthing that kicks the player around (meat cleaver, DBS, etc.). Roll + R1 2h, run at him, 2h R2 while he gets up - done

Do you put your sign just after the archstone and before the stairs or just before the fog gate after the staist and the two BP Mind Flayer?

Could I get some enemie encounters by becoming pure black or pure white before ng++ starts?
I think in the nexus I won't be able to level anymore further, because the black maiden will take me now to the final boss.
I'd like some pvp fights or some co-op-boss fights though.

you should achieve pbct and make mepistopholes quest for the foes ring before u go to next ng+ cause u have to kill npcs

I'm already pretty dark since I often die from human form but I don't know how much I need to have PBCT. And the devil will appear in the nexus?
My dark maiden lady will already guide me to the final boss.
Does this mean I still can do the mephisto-quests?

If you killed yurt, go up to 2nd level and meph sould still be there. Do her quests, but before you kill npc's make sure you have your mag/miracles set because you will be stuck with them until you beat phalanx in ng+

Yurt is the guy in the cage in 3-2. Before going down to swamp, there's a path on right side. Fall off edge onto another path and he will be there. Can't miss it cause it will have those balls of light around the area. Kill him n meph appears in nexus 2nd floor.
