WTF is on the walls?

At the first bonfire in the Catacombs trying to invade and just realized there are things moving on the walls and floor. I have never noticed before. It is tripping me out lol

They are also in the Asylum, in the cell you started.

And also elsewhere in the Catacombs, I think.

If you look closly, they are just moving sprites, or like... simply a moving texture, with transparent gaps inbetween.

Personally, I think they are supposed to be scarabs or a type of beetle.

Did anyone else just think of the mummy?

indeed those things are creepy when you first notice them. Then you just know they're there. Everywhere. Following and watching your every move.

You can even hear the creepy crawling sounds *shivers*

It made me feel itchy when I saw them.

As the resident insect geek, I think its safe to say they are not scarabs. They are more likely Isopods, this is because of the numerous plates on their bodies, scarabs and beetles only have 3 obvious body segments. So they are not beetles -- infact, not even insects. Isopods are actually crustaceans, like shrimp or lobsters.

FROM did an amazing job with them, they are like real bugs, you don't notice them until you stop and relax and then.. HOLYFUCK THEY ARE EVERYWHERE! I had to stand in awe of that room and examine them for awhile, since I am going for a masters degree in entomology, and in the trying times of winter I will even settle for virtual insects and other creepies!

Nice to see that you are doing your masters, I hope to find one sometime soon myself, though I have some thinking to do before I start hunting around

I have never actually noticed this, going to have to visit the areas mentioned now.

Took me a little while to notice too, lol. Now the sound creeps me out every time.

Oh, crustaceans, not so bad then... you could cook a few up on the bonfire!

The tastiness of arthropods does not end with crustaceans, supposedly crickets are quite tasty

I bet that's why the necromancers shoot fireballs... When they're not busy attacking adventurers, they like to cook their meals right off the walls.

I've never noticed them because I'm usually too busy staying alive but will check them out next time I'm in the catacombs. By the way Yukon, we call the bug in the picture a woodlouse over here in the U.K. As I'm sure you know there is an aquatic species too which we call a water slater. The newts in my pond love them for breakfast.

There should have been giant hostile one's later on. They could have served as a warning :3

They are called woodlouse here in canada too, among other things: rollypollys, potato bugs, rolly bugs it goes on and on. I am actually not CERTAIN what their scientific name is down to a 'T', since there are lots of different species, Isopods are just the order name.

We have them in our basement here and when it rains they get really active and start crawling upstairs. I'm assume the ingame graphics are meant to be isopods given their location and the plates on their bodies, and their shear numbers. everything about them screams woodlouse infestation haha.

And since beetles are more charasmatic insects, that is more people can tolerate them-- especially in japan-- I find it a little hard to think FROM would put in a scarab swarm for creepy value and then compound that by not making them look very much akin to scarabs.

When I first saw the bugs I thought they hieroglyphics. Thought it was a wall depicting why the catacombs are how they are.

@Yukon. Insects are great aren't they. I think they're fascinating and thery're so important because without them we wouldn't be around. It saddens me that they aren't appreciated as much as they should be just because they don't have fur or feathers, although some of the bigger spiders give me the creeps. Yeah, I know they're not strictly insects (they're arachnids). Good luck with your Masters.

Two words: Jumping spiders.

Fur, cute little buggy eyes and they are just plain cool to watch. I agree they could use a little more appreciation, there is a whole slew of things insects do for humans, and another hundred thousand things they do for the environment, but I digress!

I always play with my sound really low so my roomate doesnt wonder what I am cussing at when she hears the "you died" sound 15 times in a row, but when I went to check the catacombs again to see the bugs on the wall I had my volume up and heard them for the first time. Haha, oh man FROM, I applaud you. I cannot believe how much care the team puts into their games. Something that probably the majority of players never see, and the ones that do are just suprised by it and then they start seeing it everywhere. What a really cool way to add atompshere without being intrusive
