Hmm, then it is probably just using the literal definition of occult, not the magic type in game.

Read the search for lore, tolvo. I am sure you might find some idea as of what the sword is for.

Oh man, I don't want to missread something in my sleep deprived state. But, maybe this unhealthy breakfast will give me the strength to read it all, I'm going for it. If I don't return, tell my tights I love them.

Re: There's more to them
Those butchers are so far away from Q's domain, and the Gaping dragon prefers to hunt.
I think her name is now enough proof that Laur was her meal.
Unless mildred is right and those 2 butcher in the depths are female as well... I am not really supportive of the idea that quelagg has people prepare her meals, rather I think the developers have mentioned that is was Gaping, or it might simply be the rat. But you can't really say Quelagg has no relation then say mildred, who is in the same area as Quelagg is the only possible choice of who was going to eat Laur. Its just my personal opinion, but I think the swamp and depths are full of things that would eat people, but I don't think mildred could eat someone ALIVE, unless she flayed the skin or something, but she doesn't have the weapons for that. All the butcher weapons are for cutting off large chunks. Which would kind of make your meat A. get infected B. Die from blood loss unless you wholesale slaughtered them or ate them rapidly. I'm just inclined to believe that mildred can't eat a whole human by herself and she is so far removed from the other butchers. If there is a whole community of butchers likewise, it would be more intuitive to .. butcher a meal before feeding a community.
I think its more likely that the two butchers in the top of the depths are feeding either the rat or gaping. Because in the Artbook ENB posted he mentioned that gaping was a dragon corrupt by hunger and that he is driven crazy by the desire to just keep eating, There are several vantage points where the butchers could lop barrels down for him/her. And the rat even has his own little Chute, which serves no purpose other than.. well.. feeding him.
I don't doubt all of these beings eat people, but out of all the likely contenders only Q's the Rat and Quelagg could logically eat someone alive.
Not trying to be abrasive just throwing in my ideas so you guys can knock em around.
As for gaping dragon prefering to hunt? Where did you read that tolvo?

Re: There's more to them
I think the butchers and mildred are eating the people they catch... The rat is their rubbish desposal and that is why they prepare the food by the rubbish chute so that the leftover scraps can be dumped easy.

The fact that it isn't just in the room, it enters the room and spots you, then procceeds to chase you. From its very appearance it appears to be crawling around and seeking food, hunting. Maybe that is a feeding area it knows to go to, but then why would anyone be feeding it and keeping it alive? Maybe the Channeller, but what relation would the butchers have to them?
Also Mildred are you sure the butchers are all female? I mean, they have breasts yeah, but they could just be chunky men.

Re: There's more to them
I'm not saying it's impossible, I just really don't have a gender to go off of really with them, they could totally be either. I mean they have sacks, but that doesn't really prove anything in this day and age with how advanced medical technology is.
Damn I've made way too many of these jokes recently.

I can try and invade the Depths and as the person crawls around each corner thinking I'm getting ready to attack, I'll just examine them. I actually do this all the time to examine enemies, it confuses the *** out of people often.

Re: There's more to them
I agree with your last point Mildred but I cant see the butchers being female. They make male noises when you hit them and die. I could be wrong and I dont think it affects the lore too much but I dont see it.
@Yukon Mildred is immune to the swamp water so it would be obvious for her to be immune to most infections. The cleaver is a weapon for subduing live prey so she would likely be using it to take limbs of Laur as she ate him. If you notice the pile of bodies near the giant rat is where you drop to, out of its reach. Thats just where they dump the bodies, they're not intentially feeding the rat. Its unlikely that they even know the rat is there. Its posssible they're feeding the dragon but in y0our post you referred to the dragon as a "he". If someone could rewatch the video and see what gender ENB calls it so we know for sure.
About Dom I dont think he's hiding where he sits in the depths and firelink. He seems to happy to see you and he talks about making another fine trade every time you buy from him. I think he does what customers.

Re: There's more to them
I checked between gapings legs, SHE has nothing there. 8)
I can walk through swamp water too, but if I eat bad beef I still get sick.
Just kidding, what I meant by the infection is that the person she servered a limb off of would die.. rather painfully and provide much poorer quality meat than if she just prepared a whole body at once. A butcher does not use a cleaver to subdue a pig. its meant for taking off large hocks of meat, something that is easier to do when your prey isn't squirming in fear. I just personally find her weapons too indelicate (no offence mildred) to properly eat someone alive. However, I am going to counter myself and say Laur could have just been using a figure of speech.

Re: There's more to them
Sorry if we're too harsh. I think FROM would get some bad publicity if there was something between the dragons legs. I dont think we can use that as evidence lol. Cleaever are not normally used on live prey but the one in game says -
"Giant butcher knife wielded by the Undead man-eating cook lurking
in the Depths. More of a tool for subduing and preparing live catches
than an actual weapon."
"Those who have faced this deadly blade have a deeper sense of how helpless prey must feel."
It specifically refers to live prey.

Re: There's more to them
I admit defeat. (and I was only teasing about the harshness, I removed it because I wasn't sure if it would be taken seriously.) I don't encourage mildred and her kind to open a butcher shop anytime soon, their cuts probably look just horrible...
As for the gaping thing, if dragons are assumed to be anything like lizards/snakes.. we would need to do something a little more intrusive than just look between the legs, ahem...
