Katana - Top tier?
Not a question; fact. They have great speed, range, scale with DEX for faster casting speeds, versatile movesets, inflict bleed, are enchantable, weigh little and have little stat requirements all in 1 neat little package.

Katanas are good, but there are better weapons. I use Iaito katana because it's cool though

They are as Fighting game people would say Lag-Tier choices.

Re: Katana - Top tier?
All katanas are overused. 80% of PvP players use katanas. I've never been on the Katana kick and I don't think I ever will. The bleed effect means nothing in my opinion. I've probably been bled out less than 5 times since this game has been released. The speed doesn't necessarily mean anything because katanas are easy to parry. Other than that, it may be one of the easiest weapons to yield, but there many other good weapons out there that are available for experimentation.

Aye - the only issue for me marty is cause I use 0 poise, it gives a nice DeS feeling from the game and I prefer it xD But truthfully it helps remind me of push-locking

I go 0 poise too and naked so I have problem with both bleed and stunlock against katanas (usually just Chaos Blade though), but let's just say that I more gladly fight any Katana than Spears, MLGS or Lifehunt Scythe.

Re: Katana - Top tier?
I just can't seem to be able to parry Katanas. Rapiers, GS, UGH, BKGA, no problem. But I can't seem to find the timing to parry those bastards. However, I disagree with you Martyrs, actually being bled out is rare but if you block a lot, it's a serious problem, especially in longer duels where two people are evenly matched. It builds up faster than it goes down, and suddenly you realize the two more hits, blocked or not, and 30% of your life is gone. It puts you in a tough situation, I always carry red moss if I'm going to duel.

If something is overused I'd say it's a good indicator it's very good. That said
I've been using the Great Club & Great Axe lately which I don't see used very
often. Considering how good they are I'm surprised.

I prefer the roll-r1 attack of the Great Club

Yeah, not my experience either. Yes, katanas are common, but as common as greatscythe, MLGS, BKGA, Claymore or Spears.

Re: Katana - Top tier?
I barely see spears - I am rather annoyed by this as they are too easy to beat xD 80% is an overexaggeration - I recorded my matches today and 1/4 of the matches people were using Katanas - 1/2 had a claymore - about 1/10 had GS and surprisingly today only a stunning 1/5th had the BKGA - lemme just say the rapiers are more common - literally everyone had one of those ***!

Yeah I see quite a variation in weapons too.

Chaos Blade and Washingpole are the most common katanas and for a reason.

Is there a dmg modifier or something for the chaos blade? I've noticed a big difference between the damage from it and the iaito. More than the difference in AR. Or i could just be imagining things...

You are not imagining, it makes a lot more dmg than Iaito or Uchi for some reason I don't know.

The humanity shows in AR. Iaito AR is 410. Chaos Blade @ 10 humanity is 452, but the difference in damage is more than that.

Re: Katana - Top tier?
Katanas are definitely top tier. In a match where you can only do running R1s.
Apart from that, they're good against turtles and heavier weapons, so they make for a balanced weapon. Really though it's the running R1s that hit from a mile away which make them such good weapons.

Possibly different resistances for each target?

Re: Katana - Top tier?
Also depends on the sub-scaling of each weapon, and the different upgrade paths etc. Perhaps if you narrowed down what you're comparing you will find your answer.
Also humanity gives a 7% damage scaling at 10 humanity, but this is just what I read from some dude. Don't quote me on it.
