That's because AR works on increasing returns. the 40 damage difference between 410 and 450 equals more real damage than 40 damage difference between 310 and 350 for example. Also, there seems to be a point, right around 450, when weapon damage takes a big jump upward because of this. Everything in life is "relative." I can only speak on my experiences which must be different than yours. When I'm PvPing, most people use katanas.

When I use Kats I go with the Iaito. I used to play with the CB, but it has useless R2's. I see a decent enough variety as far as weapon classes are concerned though. I haven't been duelling at all recently, however. I mostly just gank-hunt in the Kiln. Takin' out the trash, as it were.

I don't see the appeal, but I understand why they are good. I don't find them too good, but if you compare weapons I could see why 'you''d think that. The Spear, even though I don't find it too strong, many players do, and even against turtlers, the bleed won't save you, is just so good against Katana's because of their range really. Katana's are great, but I don't find anything about them crazy. What I think is that they are really solid, and don't require a lot of skill to use (not hating on any weapon or player, but the time it takes to get good with a Katana, I would think, is less than quite a few other weapons), the fact they have an AUX effect is really important, but the most important thing, in my opinion, is that they have great R2's. Many weapon's R2's get you killed, but the Katana's basically have a huge moveset because they rock.
Top tier? Depends too much on the player, higher tier, I'd say absolutely, they are great weapons. OP tier? No way. I play dragon too, bleed is actually dangerous and I still don't feel they are OP.

I can't disagree with op, they are excellent weapons. The washing pole in particular is exceptionally dangerous, buffed or elemental.
This is a japanese game though, katana being some of the better weapons is to be expected.

There's a kind of "sweet spot" where if you're at the correct distance and angle, and you do it at the correct time, it can't be blocked or dodged. It's always a hit.
