Post by The Letter X Wed Mar 13, 2013 12:49 am

Soris and I tested for over an hour. Proximity, frequency of being kicked or attacked, or taking a large amount of damage did not seem to work. We tried both upgraded and non-upgraded weapons of many different types, trying kicks, R1 spam, ane R2s.

Prior to the testing with Soris, I invaded and hosted for a while in the Township with the ring on. I won every fight except for one, including a gank, so I had some quality test material time. I incorporated kicks, backstabs, ripostes, R1 spam, and anything else I could think of to pass on the effect. I am now suspicious that anyone who owns the DLC might be immune to this like said before. (Soris and I tested in both the Township and Catacombs so it's not just the DLC area. ) We also tested with the ring not in one's possession.

P.S. - If you really want to improve your PvP game, put on the Calamity Ring. Not only do you take double damage but you will also be sacrificing poise or defense if your original ring was Wolf or Havel's. It's the ultimate ring for making yourself more careful; I was actually landing more ripostes than normal as well.

I guess the ring can act like a virus affecting those who don't posses the dlc, though that is a long shot for me. Unless it's a counter-effect triggered by something that makes the one who lacks the ring, or the dlc suffer the ring double damage effect. Though that again I feel that is a long theory.

This reminds me of the Corrupted Blood Incident topic in Off-Topic. I can imagine a covenant forming based around this ring to pass on the curse.

I still feel like we're missing something with this. Just what is the problem because me and X basically took down most theories already presented. Also I refuse to believe that a ring made to harm the wearer has no up-side to using it, even if a minor one. I don't think that ring was made for just making things harder for the wearer. However if it does effect only those without the dlc...then what was the purpose to do that? Ugh! I'm going to rank my mind for a while with this. Also X if it does react like the Corrupt blood incident then that means anyone with the dlc can have a massive advantage in PvP with the ring.....It also reminds me of something that I don't take a liking to.

It boggles my mind as well. Another theory I have is that it's another buggy incident with the Forest
I'll assume Rynn was in the Forest unless she reads this and says otherwise.

Maybe it's like a certain sword in the shrine of storms and its power only works in the forest?

I too am a firm believer that the ring has to have some up-side to it other than bragging rights (I beat 4 Kings on NG+++ with Calamity Ring! etc)

However; this ring also bring to mind another item the community went nuts over for a while, but was proved to be nothing more than a prank on behalf of the creator.

    The Pendant.

So, we have all aready been duped once by the creator and his pendant goose chase, what's to say the Calamity ring isn't the same thing?

This isn't to say I'm not going to do tests myself, but I think it is important to keep in mind that it is possible this is just another Troll item like the pendant.

Also...Rynn, what ring slot did you have this equipped to? Maybe (Put on your Hawk Ring, because this... is a longshot) maybe the effect one happen when in a certain slot, or if it is the only ring equipped?

Three new ideas (probably dead ends, but who knows) :

    - While fighting Kalameet, you get the mark of calamity if he manages to grab you with his telekinetic attack.
That makes me think the way to infect someone with the sign could be related to the way Kalameet gives you the mark himself.
What could it be then? Something a dragon could do... Roar, breath...
Maybe something telekinetic ish : Force, WoG???
Looking at Rynn's build, I can't see anything close to it.

    - Still about Kalameet, but on other aspects :
He breath flames that are not realy fire.. This can be mimicried (<- does this word exist) by using OGS 2H R2.
Not realy being fire makes me think of Black Flame too.
Looking at Rynn's build again... Nothing...
And then I thought... Black Dragon Kalameet... Black Flame.
Rynn is using Black Cleric Set.
Is it a random coincidence? I'd say yes. But again, who knows.
Maybe there is something to investigate around Black (and maybe even Dark)

    - The telekinetic attack looks red. If we consider the mark transfer as an "infection", could blood be the mean? Rynn is using a Washing Pole -> Bleed

PS : Throwing random thoughts on top of the pile : Black Dragon -> Black Cleric -> Velka -> Ariamis -> Priscilla. Could Kalameet and Priscilla be related?

I actually have a lot of experience wearing this ring in PvP. For a few weeks I used this ring as a self-imposed challenge so to speak. I never noticed any effect being passed to other players after both hosting and invading. I was really hoping it would have some other effect but alas, it didn't...

You say most of the people did not have the dlc?

Try this then: Hit another person helping you test without the ring even being in their inventory. It may work.

Also, can we not data mine anything from the PC version?

Wouldn't that suck if you didn't have the DLC and fought someone with the ring on, and it infected your character until you bought the DLC. Now that would just be cruel...

If people see you wearing it do they sometimes put it on themselves as well, to fight fair? Maybe that is why the aura sometimes suddenly appears.
