My Top 5 Series:
#1. Berserk: The manga goes further and IMO is more interesting overall, but the anime is a good introduction even though it was made with a low budget. The "party" in the part after the anime ends even manages to avoid a single character being too generic, with the main being the closest but still hardly your "typical" protagonist.
#2. Hunter x Hunter: Of all the series involving superpowers of any variety whatsoever, Hunter x Hunter has by far the most organized and "fair" mechanics I've ever seen, and character strategy in usage is often as much, if not more important than raw power. Your typical "spikey haired protagonist" isn't so typical, either. He's willing to resort to cheap tactics occasionally, and the show doesn't overdo his "invincible potential" like so many others might...in fact even the strongest characters in the series (which the protagonist isn't) are vulnerable and have to be vigilant. This series was ahead of its time. In many ways, it's ahead of the current time.
My only criticism is that the anime's pacing leading up to the hunter exam is slow, though I haven't seen the remake to see if they handled that differently.

#3-#5. Everything from Slayers (Lina is a great protagonist and her voice acting is done so well lol) to SAO 1st season to Higurashi to Death Note 1st season has some merit. I liked Mirai Nikki. Akumetsu is an interesting read (don't think it has an anime though). I even enjoyed Bleach for a while. There are lots of shows that do things well, but still have some holes. I could make a top 10 or even 20 and there wouldn't be too much difference in my opinion between the upper and lower ends of the list.
