I guess I found out when I talked with people outside of my circle of friends about things that to me were common knowledge but to them looked like I was speaking a foreign language.

Twigster quoted some of the things I had seen when I said it appeared to be licorice. I also saw some candy online for sale that appeared to licorice. Now, if you're eating the stuff and saying that it's not that and it can be a bunch of different things I am going to trust you on it.
My guess is it maybe started as licorice but has since evolved to be more than that in your region. For instance, hot sauce in most places is just a thin sauce from some variety of peppers. In Rochester, NY however it is most often going to be similar but made with meat.
So to parallel, I might visit where you live and say "I'd like some Salmiak" and expect licorice and then get something different. Basically, the USA interpretation of your regional item is likely narrow.
So....since I'm a candy nut this question is for Spurgun:

I looked it up and according to the sources i can find (mostly finnish websites) its essential ingredient is Ammonium chloride, and even though it resembles licorice, it's not really related to it. The Ammonium chloride first comes as a white powder (they also sell Salmiak as powder, but it's not just ammonium chloride), but they color it black because apparently people rather buy black candy. They do flavor it with licorice sometimes (Which may be where the confusion comes from).
As for product pages, it's kinda hard to find any that aren't in finnish. this is the best i could find but they didn't seem to have the stronger ones there.

@Skare and Spurgun - I just realized after reading Spurgun's last post that over here in Canada, (or at least the city where I live), we used to have this candy that was a strange piece of licorice, (or similar looking), covered in this powdered substance that you could also dip it in. It had somewhat of a tangy taste. I do remember it had to be imported into the distributor so maybe it's the same thing or something close to it. Don't remember the name of it tho, sorry.
To answer Reap's question, I wouldn't really call myself a gamer. I do like games and in the last couple of years, I have played more than normal. I've always liked games but I wouldn't call myself a gamer since gaming wasn't a huge part of my life.

Another game was Fable: TLC. I went to a friend's place(I was probably around 6 or 7 around that time as well). His father let me in as my friend was apparently playing a game in the livingroom. As I went inside he said "Hey, check this cool knight out! It's my father's character." It was a knight in golden armour. It turned out he was playing Fable(Not Fable: TLC). Once I heard of Halo 2 on the Xbox, I immediately went to the story to get the console myself, and I found out I could pick 1 or 2(can't remember) games for free with it. One of them games was Fable: TLC(I was still unaware that there even was an expansion to Fable, so I didn't react when I saw it saying Fable: The Lost Chapters, I simply assumed that was the full name of the game). Later on, my mother ordered Halo 2 as a christmas present, if I'm not mistaken, which I opened up, assuming it was another game I had ordered. So I got it early. Though, being the innocent little kid that I was, I started crying and felt guilty.
TL;DR
Halo: Combat Evolved and Fable: TLC.

What I fear? Honest I think is losing someone I care a lot about. Which does contrast me from half of my relatives. Gear grinder now I got a list and there is a lot.
As for a gamer well it goes to when I was 6 or 7. I had a N64 but was not into it till in kindergarten on a trip to Disneyland where the room had a ps2 and one of the first spyro games. I got hooked and well I guess that was how I became a gamer as then I asked for a ps2 and got it...plus a GameCube and Xbox too. Those days we had money and I was spoiled.
