I can easily see this being the case, it's a bit crazy for these people to do but we see similar things elsewhere in Dark Souls, the Witches tried to create a new flame, Seath is trying to become immortal, Nito is trying to create an age of the dead, etc.

Maybe there was a mishap with the magic and it was so powerful that it destroyed the city.

Re: The Darkroot Woods
That's the idea, or maybe someone realized the thread and burned it to ash to stop their dangerous magic. Actually that is very suspicious, she was around when it was burned to ash, why was she spared?

If it was fire that destroyed the city, then how did the forest survive?

Re: The Darkroot Woods
Well life comes from death, fires can actually create teeming areas of life. So it's not unreasonable for it to happen, as well with the residual magic it could have worked like steroids causing this lush environment to rise. Much of the Darkroot is magical after all.

At least a hundred years ago, possibly up to a thousand years ago. There is a huge time gap, plus time in the world fluxes a lot, so you never really know what is the present, past, or future.

Re: The Darkroot Woods
She says "may the flames light your way however none of the Oz spells actually make flames or even draw upon the flame so at the very least we can assume that the land of oz very much supported the gods and keeping the first flame lit. Perhaps they didnt dissipate their city but that in order to defend themselves against someone they created a light so powerful it burnt the city to ashes with its heat. The magic was so intense these ashes became magical and the flowers that grew from the ashes became imbued with some of the magic of the spell that destroyed the city thus making them glow.

Re: The Darkroot Woods
Dusk was a princess. She would have had the best protection possible. She may also have been out of the land at the time with bodyguards who were all killed when she returned and was captured by Seath.

I almost feel like maybe Solaire should have gone to Darkroot in search of his very own sun. Actually, I'm going to cast the light spell near him.

Re: The Darkroot Woods
Yeah, sorry about the rant but that was my idea, to protect either their society or dusk they tried a little too hard and blasted themselves apart. My guess is dusk was given the crown not just because she is royalty but because she was talented. Like the Stephen King story Hearts in Atlantis. There's one psychic who is special because he makes others around him stronger.

Re: The Darkroot Woods
What about if actually the Golems there were of Oolacile/Oz? That those are remnants of means they used to protect her, in fact maybe that's how she survived the destruction, she was inside of a Golem.

Re: The Darkroot Woods
Maybe Dusk was spared becasue she cast the spell that destroyed oz? The crown made her too poewrful and she lost control but her own spell could not harm her?

Re: The Darkroot Woods
She doesn't strike me as the powerful type really, just because she's a princess doesn't mean she would be inclined to be a specially powered person, she could just be royalty. She was given the crown at birth wasn't she?

Yes, both the ring and crown were given to her at birth.

Re: The Darkroot Woods
So maybe a group within Oolacile saw the way things were going and gave her essentially all of the important aspects of their people and sent her off, maybe they even lied to her. Dusk seems to believe so heavily in the peaceful nature of her people, despite hidden meanings in their magic and items. Maybe she really didn't know much about her people, and was used by some as a way for others to believe this soon to be forgotten land was a grand place?

It's all good. Also, I wonder if the woods are considered a part of the east. As there is the East Wood Grain Ring, and the Dark Wood Grain Ring. What is this Eastern wood?
EDIT: I'm a moron, East Wood ring, as in a ring from the east made of wood. Boy was that a brain fart.

The oolicile catalyst does talk about a white wood though. I never noticed any white trees anywhere in the forest. That always bugged me. :/

Re: The Darkroot Woods
Hmm, Beatrice, a Witch related to the Witches of Chaos Distantly, working against Seath, who has a presence in the forest, working with the hunters who have Shiva of a the east, a man who has plans with the chaos Covenant, a part of the Witches, so many circles are made in this forest.
Possibly this was once the white woods, that the destruction caused it to change? I'm trying to think of any white trees that can be found in game, I'm going to have to look around. I feel like there might be some in Anor Londo.
Actually come to think of it the Arch Trees have a huge role in the lands, and the Darkroot Garden exists on one as does most of this world apparently, could it be on part of a magically altered arch tree? I think some of them are white, but I could be wrong.
